'm planning on picking up Netflix in order to watch the original, and then this - and Delicious in Dungeon. A reviewer I watch says he liked some things, hated others, and was undecided (based on how they go in later seasons) on others. The actors are at least trying their best rather than phoning it in, the bending is pretty good, although there is too much exposition for his taste. He could see fans of the show either loving it or hating it. He enjoyed it, but didn't love it.

Putting aside the awkward acting and changes from the original, I have an issue with the visuals of this show. Sure, the action and bending scenes look pretty good, but everything else looks really glossy and fake. Say what you will about TLA 2011, but I thought the set design was way better in that. There's a recent trend which I noticed in the Cowboy Bebop Netflix series, but also in a lot of modern TV nowadays, where everything has to look super-crisp, 4K HD. Everything is bright and epic and it gets to a point where everything starts to look more and more noticeably off and unrealistic; the visuals end up not fitting with the tone they're trying to convey. It's like when you put a filter on a photo and it's almost too much of an improvement that it starts to look wrong. And the set design falls in line with that.

I went back and watched the film version the other day. I could only get about half-way through. The production, the acting, the fights, the VFX's, all of it is much better in the Netflix show. Visually the new show is refined, and I love all the locations they are able to pull off.

I am surprised by the mixed reactions the show is having. I thought it was very strong with a few flaws, but I guess nostalgia is a hell of a drug and the cartoon was quite beloved. Whereas I can overlook some of the flaws and appreciate what did connect, I guess for others they overlook the good and only focus on the flaws. To each their own, I suppose. I do hope it gets enough viewership so they can continue. Earth Kingdom season is just ripe for an even cooler adaptation.

The show is weird, they cut and mash a bunch of things, but then add a bunch of overwritten fluff that serves little purpose. They also removed all the silliness.

And unnecessarily changed a bunch of other things on top of that.

Just finished it. It's great when it focuses on Iroh and Zuko, and just ok the rest of the time. Most of the changes and omissions were for the worse. Way too exposition-heavy and telling instead of showing, Aang never bothering to start learning to water-bend the entire season, all of the changes to Azula's character that miss the point of what made her such an intimidating villain, ect.

Take away the Iroh and Zuko stuff and it's a passable but average show that's neither great nor terrible. The Iroh and Zuko stuff really carries it.

That probably was the best change, though it wouldn't have added anything if they hadn't already changed so much that doing The Search was impossible.

I also finished watching it and it was...fine. It didn't do anything better than the original or add anything to it. Adding the grimmer elements, fire benders immolating people, Katara & Sokka's spirit visions, didn't make the show more adult, just darker. Zhoa's fate was too easy and him being weasle-y was odd but okay. Azula was given too much backstory and Mai & Ty Lee will seems weird as specialist fighters after standing around all season.

IMO, Netflix didn't do anything exceptional with the series and the money could have been better spent on something new. Hopefully it will draw new fan to the existing properties and new animated content.
