Arthur Jones — an outspoken Holocaust denier, activist anti-Semite and white supremacist — is poised to become the Republican nominee for an Illinois congressional seat representing parts of Chicago and nearby suburbs.

“Well first of all, I’m running for Congress not the chancellor of Germany. All right. To me the Holocaust is what I said it is: It’s an international extortion racket,” Jones told the Chicago Sun-Times.

Indeed, Jones’ website for his latest congressional run includes a section titled “The ‘Holocaust Racket’” where he calls the genocide carried out by the German Nazi regime and collaborators in other nations “the biggest blackest lie in history.”

I'll note that I'm not opposed to the FBI investigation, but one argument would be that the process requires some corroboration in the beginning, and it would be fishy if it started with one potentially biased source.

My theory on Republican opposition is that the Russia stuff isn't too bad, but Republican leaders figure there's shadiness in the background of a major figure in the 1980s and 1990s real estate market that could get out with an expansive investigation, in addition for the potential for Trump to commit perjury when under oath.

There are a couple of problems with that argument. One is that Nunes himself admits that it was started thanks to George Papadopoulos in the Vox story you brought up, with this pic displayed


The other is that several of those involved have been investigated for Russian-linked money laundering and other hinkey stuff since 2013 or earlier in some cases, not to mention stuff like Page's public "I advise Russia" statement revealed earlier this week.

The biggest problem with this line of reasoning? They should have been up in arms a decade earlier over the Fugitive Slave Act... but that came about when the Federal Government was bending over backwards for the Lords of Dixie so I imagine it does not count.

Odds are very good that the Democrats can pick up at least 12 seats, odds are nearly as good that they can get the 24 seats needed to regain control, and within the realm of possibility the Dems could even pick up some 40 seats.
