Coming in late May;
Post-Gerber Defenders...this is the stuff I'm most familiar with and enjoy.
Those are some great stories in there!
I remember and loved that issue, #45, with the ladies fighting against their male counterparts, due to the males being evilly influenced by the Red Raji. While she did have the strength to go up against the Hulk, they rarely showed it. And such a great picture of Valkyrie and Dragonfang! The artwork is fantastic.
Was Luke just a guest star there? He's not on the corner box as a regular should be.
Yep. Luke was just a temp guest star.
Nighthawk had a deal with him to pay him for service whenever the Defenders needed his assistance. In this instance, when Valkyrie "disappeared" without word--she actually had been arrested and was in prison--Kyle hired Luke, who still was with the team during the cover scene you mention.
Love this phase of the Defenders. Artwork by Keith Giffen, during his strongly Kirby-influenced period, and Klaus Janson. The rise of the LMD Zodiac. Though I did find it an anticlimatic line-up for the comemorative 50Th issue (Nighthawk - minus his jet-pack -, Hellcat, Valkyre, Hulk and Moon-Knight).
Peace
Sweet Sister? Not Sweet Christmas?
And thanks Phoenixx9 for answering my question.
Luke Cage said Sweet Sister first. In fact, they were two separate minced oaths "Sweet Sister" and "Christmas" that later got combined.
Matt Murdock's cooler twin brother
I'd give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety's sake!

Powerman's grandmother didn't like him to swear, therefor: "Sweet Christmas!"
I always loved Luke's sayings--they would make me laugh as I was reading.
