I have to admit I'm looking forward to this. I haven't seen or heard anything about this show that gives me pause. The only thing that even approaches a question is a lingering doubt that the production quality can be maintained (take a look at the first episode of House, for example, and you'll see production quality that is never attempted again).

Vox.com had a review today that makes me more excited for it than previously.

"There's a difference between a serious superhero and a superhero played seriously."

This sort of observation is like manna from heaven to me. It's why I didn't care for Man of Steel, and don't look forward to Batman v Superman. It's why I think Amazing Spider-man did less well than Raimi Spider-man. Serious superhero fits Batman in live action, and almost no other superhero.

It appears that Supergirl gets it. I can't wait to find out more.
Yeah, this and Blindspot are the two shows I was/am most excited about. I really hope it does well, though I'm nervous about it not being in the best time slot for it to succeed. *fingerscrossed*

    Wait-a-minute!

Superman has been public knowledge for quite a while by this point, yet the idea of aliens existing is still scoffed upon by the public? Do they think he's a metahuman?

I am not sure yet. It was so cheesy in some places especially the stuff between the sisters and the whole "Henshaw hates them filthy aliens" angle. The effects were pretty good and Benoit is pretty good as Supergirl, but there are just so many plot holes in the writing. I mean you are saying that a whole Phantom Zone prison crashed on Earth and that is not Superman's top priority? Or that he just left Kara's ship lying around for the DEO to find? You can not use Superman as such a central figure in your shows mythology and then just ignore common sense things to explain away glaring plot holes.

I will give it another episode or two to see how it plays out, but am on the fence right now.

I enjoyed the pilot overall, I agree it was pretty cheesy in parts, and the Kryptonese line was kind of silly (It should be Kryptonian) But overall I think its an enjoyable enough show to stick with.

It certainly had its fair she of cheesy contrivances:

    • How did Kara not notice the city-size space station trailing in her wake as she exited the Phantom Zone?
    • How did the DEO get their hands on Kara's ship? Did her "parents" turn it over to them? Because it seems unlikely that Superman would have just left it sitting in the desert, waiting for someone to find.
    • Who, in this day and age, still has a lo-res camera on their cell phone? And how is it only one person on the plane got a picture of her?
    • Was it really necessary to repeatedly refer to her as a "female hero"? She's a woman. We get it!
    • "James" could have at least tried to employ a bit of subtlety when he was dropping hints to Kara. As it was, he came across as kind of a smug jerk.
    • For someone who likely never threw a punch in her life before, Kara seemed like a pretty proficient fighter, esp. since she was going up against a guy who was an ex-con and probably a soldier.
    • Given that the show openly acknowledges Superman's existence, the lengths they went through to avoid saying the word "Superman" were almost comical. I assume there are some kind of rights issues in play.

All that aside . . . I quite liked it. Benoist was good, as was Chyler Leigh. Henshaw was a complete dick, but I liked the character and the way the actor played him. I did think that Flockhart was a bit too arch, a slight caricature of the heartless boss. Hopefully she dials it back going forward. I thought the action scenes were quite good and entertaining. Quality production values and execution. Some real punch to them.

I like "Kryptonese." It actually makes more sense used as the name of a language/dialect, esp. since they presumably speak more than one language on Krypton.

All in all, a solid opening.

Very cheesy. But Supergirl reminds me of Felicity from Arrow. I might stick with it for a few more episodes to see if it loses it's cheesiness

No, it's Kryptonese. The official language of Krypton has always been Kryptonese. DC changed it to Kryptonian (unofficially) but the name still stuck, even in Superman: Birthright which was Superman's official origin up until the New 52. Officially that's what it's been called since the beginning.

For most of Superman's published history, Kryptonian writing was represented by random, alien-looking squiggles. In the 1970s, E. Nelson Bridwell attempted to rationalize these squiggles into a 118-letter alphabet, referring to the language as "Kryptonese." This standardized alphabet was then used by DC Comics until John Byrne's 1986 "reboot" of the Superman universe.[7]

I liked how there was a Kryptonian prison that was inside of the Phantom Zone

interesting. didnt know that. still i dont really like the way it sounds. if someone's Spanish they speak Spanish, Germans speak German, if someone's Japanese they speak Japanese. it just sounds odd to say they're Kryptonian and speak Kryptonese.

    just my opinion.

It all fits together too nicely. Her sister works for a secret organization that protects humanity from aliens? And the prison of aliens that she brought to earth have been quiet for a decade until she goes public? I'm sorry i missed Gotham for this. (Did watch Gotham this morning, though.)

And damn it, his name is Jimmy!

It was a lot of fun, a nice mixture of comic-bookiness, danger, and action.

They just need to tighten up on the mythos a bit, but other than that I think it'll be a great addition to the DCTV-verse

I enjoyed it. But most of the content was from the trailer so if you enjoyed the trailer then you enjoyed this episode, hence I would like to see if they can keep this up for episodes 2 and 3.

I saw a complaint about Kara's fighting skills. Well, of course she's a crap fighter, so is her cousin. I wonder why?

I saw a complaint about Henshaw's character but the comic book mythos always has a character like this. Marvel has J.J.Jameson for example.

    Default Supergirl

CBS's new tv show SUPERGIRL had a really good series premiere, at least ratings-wise.

Looking at the new show now from a non-Superverse-centric lens:

I really liked the series premiere, thought it was a solid "B" grade, in terms of grading it strictly as a pilot episode (which I feel you have to do with pilots versus any subsequent episodes of any show).

The next question this show will face is ... how many people will watch the second episode and beyond? There's usually a noticeable drop-off after a big series premiere, but not always. And I don't know how much having THE BIG BANG THEORY as a lead-in pushed those numbers.

Melissa Benoist is excellent as Kara Zor-El / Danvers. She nails the "Girl Next Door" vibe that (IMHO) is what Supergirl should be giving off (as opposed to "Sex on Legs" vibe that other comic book characters get).

Mehcad Brooks as James Olsen will take some getting used to, even for some of the more open-minded Superverse fans, but to casual viewers, it shouldn't be a big deal at all.

Pretty much everyone else was good to very good. Calista Flockhart as Kara'a boss Cat Grant needs the most tweeking, but she serves an important role.

Vartox was wasted. I get they wanted a serious threat for Kara's first fight, but I think they could have used a different villain in that case. Funny Vartox can hopefully still be used down the road, even if you have to re-name/re-cast him after Serious Vartox.

The show basically starts off during "Superman: Year Twelve", where Superman is so famous and well-known that his presence is acknowledged by everyone as a fact of life on this Earth. He is mentioned by name (Yes, they do actually say the name "Superman" in the show). He is also the only public super-hero on the planet at the start of the series. IMHO, these two facts prove that SUPERGIRL does not take place on the same Earth-CW with ARROW and THE FLASH and the upcoming LEGENDS OF TOMORROW.

What did y'all think of the series pilot episode? Will you be tuning in for more?

I loved it too. Jimmys energy is off or too much, sometimes being sexy is not enough but he could get better.

I finally watched it. It was pretty good. It seems this show might focus on alien DC Comics stuff like how Arrow usually does non-powered DC Comics stuff and Flash does super-science DC Comics stuff. Jimmy seemed a little too poised to be the Jimmy we're used to, but we'll see how that plays out. It was nice to see the DEO again, I don't think those guys have been in DC Comics since the early 2000s, having been supplanted by Argus. What bugs me though is why they called that guy who was clearly The Persuader by the name Vartox. I mean, cosmic baddie with a big axe just screams "Persuader" to me.
