I thought she was one of the best of Glee: The New Class. Interesting that Grant Gustin was also on Glee. If they ever do a Flash/Supergirl crossover, there's got to be a sing off.

That was just a throw away gag (as was the Batman reference on Lois and Clark). I feel like the closest we've come (not counting Man of Steel/Dawn of Justice) to a serious implication that both co-exist was in Superman Returns.

She's probably just rusty with them or not as skilled as Clark is because she apparently hadn't used them in a really long time aside from menial tasks like using her Super-Hearing to get ready for Cat showing up in the office.
The explanation is sound, but if Kara is going to be a full-fledged superhero, that's another level of training that only Superman can give her. And I'm kind of tired of seeing Superman constantly abandoning people with powers like his. I know in the Silver Age comics, he kind of just dumped her off at an orphanage and only let Supergirl out as a "secret weapon", which is kind of messed up, but what's with this new trend of ditching fellow Kryptonians on all these DC TV shows? He avoided Superboy like the plague on Young Justice and even on Krypto the Superdog, he just leaves Krypto to some random family in Metropolis.

He seemed much more the sort of person Superman would actually become good friends with, and he seems much more like a character that can be built upon in an interesting way. You cast "Jimmy" and you are kind of stuck with a one trick pony. They avoided that pitfall in a very successful way, I think.

I'm not one to be in favor of huge shifts from established characters generally, but this change was for the best.

We didn't get a chance to see any levels to Cat, but I expect they'll come. Flockhart doesn't strike me as likely to take a two-dimensional role.
I dug this version of Jimmy too.

The way I imagine this is, seeing how this Superman has been around for at least a decade in the public eye, this Jimmy may have once been the scrawny bumbling geeky kid we all know, but through his friendship and many adventures he likely had with Superman, he matured into a guy who has seen and experienced a lot of stuff, perhaps even inspired him to go to the gym to bulk up. It's believable that this Jimmy, who has got his sh!t together would be trusted by Superman to act as Kara's "guardian" or mentor of sorts. I can't imagine someone like the Jack Larsen or Marc McClure or Sam Huntington Jimmy (i.e., the kind of Jimmy the detractors seem to expect) being someone Superman would trust to do this for him.

We have to approach this as world in the midst of Superman year 11 or 12. Superman has been around for a long time and has had a lot of unseen adventures. Lois, Jimmy, Perry and Cat have all changed and evolved from who we think of as their traditional set ups. For all we know, This Superman and Lois are already married with a kid,Perry may have retired or passed on, and as we see, Cat is now running her own media empire (perhaps this version had a blog like the current comics version once upon a time and we are kind of seeing where that leads her) and JAMES is no longer Superman's goofy kid photographer side kick, but his own man.

I'm 35 nearly 36 now. I'm definitely not the same man I was at 25, and definitely not the same person I was at 15. People change as they grow up. A grown up, confident James Olsen is almost an untried entirely new concept in live action, and one I welcome in this context.

But he was brainwashed and under the League of Assassin's control when he did it. If he's a villain, then by that standard so is Thea on Arrow.

Oh yeah, I know. She was doing it on purpose.

I just hated they pronounced it "CARE-UH" on Smallville and many of the DTV. Car-Uh sounds more....alien to me. LOL I dunno. It's how it was pronounced in the original movie. lol.

Cat seemed to really take issue with Kara bringing up the Daily Planet, so I wonder if there's a lot of bad blood between her and the Planet and if she worked there in the past...I also wonder how she'd react if someone brought up Lois Lane ?

    Default Supergirl

CBS's new tv show SUPERGIRL had a really good series premiere, at least ratings-wise.

Looking at the new show now from a non-Superverse-centric lens:

I really liked the series premiere, thought it was a solid "B" grade, in terms of grading it strictly as a pilot episode (which I feel you have to do with pilots versus any subsequent episodes of any show).

The next question this show will face is ... how many people will watch the second episode and beyond? There's usually a noticeable drop-off after a big series premiere, but not always. And I don't know how much having THE BIG BANG THEORY as a lead-in pushed those numbers.

Melissa Benoist is excellent as Kara Zor-El / Danvers. She nails the "Girl Next Door" vibe that (IMHO) is what Supergirl should be giving off (as opposed to "Sex on Legs" vibe that other comic book characters get).

Mehcad Brooks as James Olsen will take some getting used to, even for some of the more open-minded Superverse fans, but to casual viewers, it shouldn't be a big deal at all.

Pretty much everyone else was good to very good. Calista Flockhart as Kara'a boss Cat Grant needs the most tweeking, but she serves an important role.

Vartox was wasted. I get they wanted a serious threat for Kara's first fight, but I think they could have used a different villain in that case. Funny Vartox can hopefully still be used down the road, even if you have to re-name/re-cast him after Serious Vartox.

The show basically starts off during "Superman: Year Twelve", where Superman is so famous and well-known that his presence is acknowledged by everyone as a fact of life on this Earth. He is mentioned by name (Yes, they do actually say the name "Superman" in the show). He is also the only public super-hero on the planet at the start of the series. IMHO, these two facts prove that SUPERGIRL does not take place on the same Earth-CW with ARROW and THE FLASH and the upcoming LEGENDS OF TOMORROW.

What did y'all think of the series pilot episode? Will you be tuning in for more?

I loved it too. Jimmys energy is off or too much, sometimes being sexy is not enough but he could get better.

I finally watched it. It was pretty good. It seems this show might focus on alien DC Comics stuff like how Arrow usually does non-powered DC Comics stuff and Flash does super-science DC Comics stuff. Jimmy seemed a little too poised to be the Jimmy we're used to, but we'll see how that plays out. It was nice to see the DEO again, I don't think those guys have been in DC Comics since the early 2000s, having been supplanted by Argus. What bugs me though is why they called that guy who was clearly The Persuader by the name Vartox. I mean, cosmic baddie with a big axe just screams "Persuader" to me.

I liked it, not a bad pilot. Looking forward to this show. Anyone know who the villain is for tonight?

Yup that was him. Apparently he plays news anchor a lot.

I so don't like James knowing Clark is superman

This episode was much better other than them namedropping Clark every 5 minutes
