    Cutting Edge (for better and worse) still uses test pilots;
NASA - is currently testing engines planned to power the first stage of their maned Space Launch System (SLS) megarocket, for future missions which includes sending astronauts to an asteroid and ultimately to Mars.
    http://www.space.com/26964-nasa-mega...st-launch.html
Commercial - Virgin Galactic is developing and testing sub-orbital and orbital launch vehicles

Ultimately he'll just take it to the next step in human space/dimension exploration.
That is in reality and fiction, as we approach breaking superluminal, and dimensional boundaries, we will always want to know if a human can achieve it.
And pilots will man these ships well into the future.

It's not always about the ship itself, human willpower and endurance is also always tested, pushed to it's limits. We just need to know, it's our natural drive to push the boundaries of our limits. Despite machines taking over many jobs, We will always want to know what we as humans are capable of, what extremes physically and mentally we can push ourselves to.
    It's never over.
For that you will always need those who wilfully instinctively step forward to the task, where others draw the line. That is what the ring recognized in Jordan.
This human "character" is never obsolete.

How about an insurance agent? No? Engineer? Toy sales rep? Trucker? Air cargo pilot? Plane mechanic?

    He's already had several jobs...

    I vote for astronaut though.

I'm cool with Hal being in the air force.

Both Hal & John have military experience. Guy was a cop. It makes sense that some GL's would already have experience with life/death situations prior to getting the ring.

Yeah, but how does he encounter Abin Sur? Do they end up at the same party or something? You know what...I like this idea.

LOL why do you say this as if it were fact? Quality control, ESPECIALLY with something so dangerous and expensive requires a person to actually fly it before production. Hence the need for test pilots.

Or are you talking about within the boundaries of the fictional DC universe?

There's no way it can go wrong.

Unless they hire the kind of artist who'd still have the women wearing less, and tighter clothes than stripper Hal.

Not that I believe in this no-more-test-pilots thing.

I think it's even less likely there. Fiction tends to hold onto outdated jobs and outdated ways of doing jobs for decades after the fact.

There are superhero fans who'll get on twitter to complain that Peter Parker or Hal Jordan used a fictionalized Twitter in a comic.
Patsy Walker on TV! Patsy Walker in new comics! Patsy Walker in your brain! And Jessica Jones is the new Nancy! (Oh, and read the Comics Cube.)

Abin Sur's wife got carried away at a Bachelorette party that Hal just happened to dance at. When Abin went to confront Hal the next night at the club, he couldn't help but to admire the unparalleled courage to act as man meat within the large ravenous crowd of customers fighting to get onto the stage.
