For all of its downsides, The United States should not have ended general military conscription. It was an understandable response to The Pentagon Papers, and the myriad wrongs of The Vietnam War. The Cons, however, far outweighed The Pros.

I'm not talking about troop quality. I'm talking about making people from Montana, and Arizona, and Indiana, and New Hampshire, and Georgia share a common experience, and fostering empathy for one another. This not just about national defense, but about binding a Nation together.
Our Armed Services are falling into what is known as Praetorianism. They come from a few places, from small groups of families. That makes for a group that is easy to enlist by a dictator or an oligarchy.
ETA: Don't worry about troop quality. Given an adequate supply of recruits, competent drill sergeants can handle the quality issue.

All you'll have is a group of bodies ready to be sent to the middle east at the lightest excuse.
It wont unite a nation, it just leads to dead teens. To be frank this isnt the 40s anymore. Everyone knows there is no such thing as a "just war" and the last 70 years of American conflicts have all been shady as ****. Why should anyone want to get killed for a oligarchs bank balance?
Then what we've done is reduce the stake of most of the voters in preventing wars, and turned the weapons over to an increasingly small caste, who are becoming steadily more susceptible to a charismatic dictator. Just as this isn't the 1940s anymore, it isn't the 1780s either; local militias aren't going to be able to hold their own against an oppressive state as they could 250-odd years ago. Those who think it can't happen here had better hope they don't live long enough to see how wrong they are.
