Outside of very few exceptions, musicals suck.

"They can be a great people Kal-El, they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all, their capacity for good, I have sent them you. My only son." - Jor-El
I love Musicals!
There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!
I liked the Cats: The Musical: The Movie. It was so bizarre.
All of world literature began as musicals.
In the beginning, all literature was orally communicated. And to help them remember, the bards would sing the lines--often with other instruments to keep the rhythm. These stories were only written down much later. So literature begins as a musical performance.
The poem of Beowulf is the subject of much debate as to whether it was passed down through the oral tradition or whether it was an original written composition. And just when it would have originated follows from that--no less than J.R.R. Tolkien has weighed in on this debate. However, the earliest dates for Beowulf--if it was an oral performance--would be the 6th century, which is late in the history of literature. The epic poem of Gilgamesh had its origins three thousand years ago.
