Default What spurred Batman's decision to return to the Justice League after his Outsiders venture?

In the mid-1980s, Batman infamously quit the Justice League and formed the Outsiders when the League refused to support his intervention in a case in Malkovia. It was a bitter split, and Batman stayed out of the Justice League for years.

Batman ultimately returned to the Justice League, and of course, we know sales drove this choice in the real world. In story, though, what drove Batman's decision to return to the Justice League? What made it OK and even desirable/necessary for him to return after that acrimonious split?

If I remember right, the JL Batman returned to was not "his" old JL, but the post-satellite JL-Detroit that Martian Manhunter was running at the time (Aquaman having stomped off in a huff or something). So, none of the people Batman was actually mad at were on the team, and the JL had morphed into something a lot closer to the Outsiders anyway.

I'm thinking it was mostly an editor who stated that Batman will now be returning to the Justice League, and not much explanation was given for this in-story.
