I've got a couple of pictures that I did up of MJ on my deviantart page, but I don't think I'm allowed to post them since they may go against the new forum rules regarding personal promotion.

An interesting video of Stan the Man talking about MJ and Gwen, and how MJ took a life of her own and couldn't be contained from overshadowing Gwen no matter how hard he tried to make Gwen the more interesting one:

I was just talking about this with another person, but one of the things that really set MJ apart from other love interests was that she wanted to be an actress.

Why is that important? Well, because it showed her character had ambitions. She had a goal she wanted to work towards. She wasn't already an actress. She wanted to be an actress, which gave her an arc towards her development. This was a lot more than a lot of female love interests got, even to this day. When we first met Betty, she was just a secretary, and showed no desire to move beyond that role. It wasn't until much later that her character became a journalist, and that was after a long period where she quit her job to become someone's wife. Who knew what Liz wanted in her life. And while Gwen did have that one science class with Peter, we really didn't know what Gwen truly wanted to work towards. Even Carlie was mainly just identified by her profession, and we didn't get much beyond that for years, the most complex thing we found out about her was that she played roller derby.

MJ had a goal. She wasn't an actress yet, but she wanted to be one. This was very similar to Peter. Peter wanted to be a biologist, but he wasn't yet. That gave him a goal to work towards as well. Which gives a lot more depth and characterization than other characters normally get. It was a good foundation to work from. It gave creators a through line that helped ground her character over the course of her history.

    I don't get it.
Is that suppose to be if Steve Ditko drew Mary Jane, or if she was just ugly instead? Or is it another comic series with the putting different captions over?

If that was to have been Mary Jane, she would not be the character that we would know and love today...

Has Mary Jane and Debra Whitman ever had any sort of interaction before?

Not that I remember. MJ left for a while, I think Deb came and went during that period.

If MJ had taken Deb as a wingman (wingwoman?), it would have done everybody's favorite bespectacled mousy blonde a ton of good.

Were there any stories where MJ dating advice as a subplot? I just can't seem to remember if that happened. It would be cool, MJ gives a guy tips on how to get a girl interested in him, only for it to backfire on both of them.

Wasn't she the designated character to push Carlie down Peter (and the reader's) throat throughout much of Big Time? She also gave Gwen this advice about men:

I meant when Peter and MJ were together.
