The Ultimates by Al Ewing custom oversized omnibus - snagged this on ebay a while ago and didn’t know anything about it but this was a fun run! Art varies from great to really not great but I enjoyed the story a lot. Ever since I read the Infinity Gauntlet I have been a fan of the Marvel cosmic entities. So here they were in spades.

Gideon Falls Deluxe Edition 1 - This was great, appropriately creepy for Spooktober and now I'm sad that it will be a while before the second deluxe edition will be out. I do like the combination of horror, mystery and maybe even sci-fi and I think the artwork is really great for this type of story.

Highly recommended.

Mountains of Madness by Adam Fyda HC - meh. After the most excellent adaptation of this famous Lovecraft story by Culbard, this one was very disappointing. There is no real atmosphere which is due to the stilted, unnatural dialogue and while it's supposed to be a sequel to the original story, it feels like a rehash. Trying to replicate the story beats of the original but falling short every single time. No added value to this one. Save your time and money.

Lovecraft: The Myth of Cthulhu by Esteban Marotto - a bit less meh than the book mentioned above but still underwhelming. The black & white art is quite cool at times, but there is practically no dialogue in these stories, it's more like captions (probably from the original texts) places next to illustrations. That makes for disengaged reading - the comics medium can be used in much better ways.

Fatale Deluxe Edition 1 - an attempt by my favourite writer/artist duo to incorporate some supernatural elements in their usual noir fare and they do not disappoint. Still need to read the second deluxe edition to judge the entire series but so far they have never let me down. Even when they are not at their peak (like The Fade Out or Criminal which are my favourites), they are still way better than most others. I like how they keep the supernatural elements relatively limited, which adds to the mystery. Can't wait to dive in again tonight.

Fatale Deluxe Edition 2 - great ending to the series. Really Brubaker and Philips have not let me down. Great Spooktober read. Also these older Image deluxe editions are really great.

A Study in Emerald - this was a great and fun little book. I hadn’t read the prose version before and didn’t know at all what it was enough. I loved how Gaiman introduced the more eery elements that make you realise that this world is not like it should be.

Providence by Alan Moore HC 1-3 - this was great! Undoubtedly I missed many layers but it’s very dense in a good way and I while the prose bits turned me off at first (especially as they’re handwritten!) they did add to the story.

The Fearsome Doctor Fang TPB - another of these really nice oversized TKO trades. Nice adventure story, got a bit of an Indiana Jones vibe. Nice art, bit sloppy but very dynamic and easy to follow. Nice colours too, lots of reds. Writing-wise it's not on teh same level as the TKO trades I've read before (Sentient by Lemire and Sara by Ennis) but it was enjoyable.

I read both stories in a couple of hours. Well written and very engaging.

Reckless: Destroy All Monsters by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips.

Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. 1952-1954 Omnibus - even though the main narrative has long ended, it's so great to dive into this world again. Even more than I had expected - I thought after all, the highest stakes stories were already had and we know how it all ends, this will surely be filler. Glad to report it isn't. Already looking forward to the 1955-1957 omnibus that is sure to come at some point.

From Hell by Alan Moore Master Edition - wow. This was really a great experience, especially reading the notes after each chapter. Took my time with it, sometimes only reading 1 chapter + notes a day and I enjoyed every minute of it. The amount of research / information that went into each panel is insane. Also liked the colouring. I had flicked through the black and white version before and thought it looked slightly confusing at times, especially where several similarly-dressed characters were together. Having some colour made it easier to distinguish them. Overall the colours were rather subdued, to the point that sometimes only one faint colour was added to a panel.

Middlewest by Skottie Young Complete Collection HC - very good and quick read! Basically a father and son story at heart, but also about that you can choose your family. Reminded me in some ways of the best aspects that can sometimes be found in some of Remender's work, with how our own bad experiences can be perpetuated by us to traumatise people around us who we should treat with nothing but love. Powerful stuff, especially for a parent. The world depicted looks normal for about 2 pages and then you start realising that it is rather different. Young never really explains why the world is as different as it is. While I thought that it added to the world-building, I would have liked some more background info. Maybe that was in the bonus materials which I skipped

Primordial is written by Jeff Lemire and the art is by Andrea Sorrento. I like it but I rather trade wait it.

I have this edition but haven't read it yet. I'd tried reading the B&W version years ago but never finished it.

Not because it was bad, but because like with Gideon Falls this book seems to be full of characters that keep alluding to mysteries and never talking straight, which I understand is a trope of mystery writing and I'm not expecting the entire plot to be in the first issue. But I can only take so much of "you know, don't you?" "Know what?" "This has all happened before". "I just know HE/HER wouldn't like it" etc. type writing where vague **** is just piled on top of each other without any real, likable characters to ground things (like, say, the TV show Lost).

I thought it was a miniseries so it's why I gave it a shot.

I also read SWORD issue 10 which was pretty good. I wrote a review in the X-Books forum if anyone's interested.

Doctor Who "Empire of the Wolf" is fun but light on content.

Moon Knight issue 5 is pretty good. Jed McKay reminds me of Al Ewing. They make continuity feel fun rather than baggage.

Just read X-Force #25. It was pretty bad. 1 out of 5 stars.
