Default Star Wars 7 - The Spoilers Awaken :)

I dont know if this thread is necessary, and if not the mods can just fold my thread into another.

But this thread WILL have spoilers for the new movie. You have been warned!

If you dont want to see spoilers TURN BACK NOW!!!

And my first comment is - I give it an 8. It was pretty good, and I laughed out loud in many places and enjoyed the fan service.

But as an honest question, how many time are the bad guys going to try the same dumb plan before they realize it just doesn't work?!

The next planet destroying super-weapon should be called "The One-Shot."

If ten years of recording The Young and the Restless for my mother have taught me anything, it's that characters in serial dramas are always happily in love...until they're not

I do like Kylo Ren more than Anakin in 2 and 3.

Both are pretty whiny, but at least Ren is SUPPOSED to be whiny. You don't have to look at him and say to yourself "THIS is the guy who became Darth Vader? Seriously?"

Of course he is also well on the way to becoming the most hated character in the franchise. Possibly even more than Jar Jar. But again, with the virtue of it being deliberate and not just because of not so great story telling

he really didn't strike me as whiny,he was easily the most imposing villain we've seen Vader in Empire, VERY easily superior to any of the villains we saw in the prequels, everything from his movement, body language, his style of speech, the voice modulation(which i think aided a LOT), etc

I really loved all the new characters, Ren, Finn, Rey, BB8, and Poe. The next movie needs more Poe.

I liked it a lot. Yeah, the final act is basically a third (fourth if you count The Phantom Menace control ship) Death Star run. I would have preferred something different for the super-weapon. But you need some kind of big, end battle and that fit the bill.

My biggest complaint is that Han dies weakly. He's Han Solo. He deserved a more heroic death than what was on the screen.
Hope is not lost today. It is found.

I kind of agree. Han basically becomes a prop for Kylo Ren's charcter development.

See - that's why you ALWAYS shoot first!

Which is why Luke looks so depressed at the end. He knows his fate is to train Rey and then get bumped off so she can replace him

Totally agree about Poe. But I cant see how Kylo can rate above Dooku. Christopher Lee is just too cool.

I love Christopher Lee as an actor and still mourn that we won't see him in another movie, but no Dooku was so under utilized and weakly written he in no way shape or form measured up to Ren. And this is where you see the difference a director can make in a film, Ren's body language was AWESOME for a villian, the way he stalked when he moved, the standing still and nonchalant only to explode with quick decisive movement(it also hurt Dooku that Lee really wasn't all that mobile in that stage of his life). That makes for a GREAT villain. Also my mouth fell open when he stopped the blaster bolt in the opening scene, THAT was impressive.

Default Star Wars Force Awakens Special Podcast.

I debated tossing this in here or in the film forum; but the film forum seems more about film/tv... and this seems a little more open.

So my friend and I typically do a podcast about comics - but we did one this past week about Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Typically I will spend anywhere from 6 to 20 hours editing the podcast (taking out "ums", dead air, moving conversation pieces around, so everything flows).

Well this one was no different - I spent about 20 hours all together editing this one.

But I had fun with it - because I dropped in all kinds of Star Wars sound effects scattered throughout that really enhanced the podcast!

If you've seen the movie, please give it a listen - I am wide open to any feedback - positive or negative!

If you enjoyed it, by all means, feel free to share it on social media! (Word of mouth costs nothing, but helps tremendously!)

All right - I will stop being excited and post the link to the podcast (on our site - it's also on iTunes and such)...

Default Star Wars: The Mary Sue

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpS6...el=Uptomyknees

The link is to Max Landis' calling out / explaining his critique of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and his charge that Rey is a Mary Sue. I can't disagree with him. Maybe you can.

I won't go as far as say that Rey is a Mary Sue but I will say that some things came to her far too easily.

I never really viewed the force as "magic" but TFA came dangerously close to treating it as such with Rey just using it at random with zero guidance/training. The movie treated the force like its some innate mutant power that one can splurge out without any guidance/training. Neither Anakin nor Luke "applied" the force in advanced ways (despite the former's insane midichlorian count) without Jedi advice. That I had a serious problem with.

Anyway, I won't go as far as saying Rey is a "Mary Sue" because what I'm referring to isn't a "Mary Sue" character.

Max Landis is a douche. I have no interest in that dudes hot take on anything having to do with women.

I do indeed. Her true tests just haven't surfaced yet. Again, first film in a three film trilogy and all that.

Sounds like she didn't need to be in the movie then.

Dude, I don't know Landis from Adam - but nothing he said came off as douchy and even if he is one to you his critique is not douce based.
