Asterix 36 (2 issues worth) - Major improvement over volume 35. Actually makes me look forward to volume 37. Loved the wordplay here and there. The story wasn't very deep or anything, but the drawings and chracterisations are spot on.

Het lijk en de bank (3 issues worth) - First translation to Dutch for Tony Sandoval. Very good book and will be one of my favourites of the year I think. Beautiful pictures, great story. Hopefully Magnetic Press will also pick this up for the English language market.

The Tipping Point (5 issues worth) - Humanoids anthology, with a line-up of artists that'll make you drool. As with every anthology some stories work better than others, but overall pretty good read. I loved the book for there was a nice mix of Western and manga writers/artists. Strongest works imo are Hanako's Fart by Taiyo Matsumoto for the funny first words and great art, The Awaking by Emmanuel Lepage for his intimate story and amazing art, John Cassaday's Huckleberry Friend also for the fantastic art and the excellent solution of a dilemma and finally Bastien Vives' The Child, or is it? Quite haunting that last one. I also loved Paul Pope's and Frederik Peeters' art a lot, but did't really see the point of their stories.

Old Pa Anderson (3 issues worth) - Hermann & Son's new book that is quite the heartbreaking story about a Old Pa that has lost his grand daughter 8 years ago in 1950's Mississippi. The family is black, so do the math there... Gut wrenching really and to think that these days there is still so much hate towards people that are different. The testimonials in the back of the book give even more ridiculous examples of racial hatred. This book makes me quite furious, since if it's something I hate is when people are mistreated for being 'different', whatever the hell that word even means. Either way I hope this gets a translation from Dark Horse, since that is what this book deserves.

    February total: 30 issues

Arsenal vol.1 #1-4: Great mini. I appreciated the fact that Roy and Vandal shared a connection. We really get into his head and see what kind of person he is. I like that he tries to be a good father, in spite of not having any confidence in himself. His relationship with Dinah is developed and that's something that hasn't been touched on before. Hopefully he gets his own series one day.

Titans vol.1 #2: This issue tells you why Dick is one of the best leaders in the DCU. He even told Superman to back off.

The Immortal Iron Fist #1-2: I've been looking for a mystical, kung-fu comic book for the longest. I found it and boy is it good so far.

What did you think of We Stand On Guard? I've seen a mixture of reviews so far, but am holding out for the HC release.

    update:

Snowpiercer HC 1 & 2 (~11) - Saw these on clearance and thought i'd give 'em a go. Didn't realize the first one is over 30 years old! Granted, i don't read much translated material, as in my experience it comes across as choppy and awkward more often than not. These stories were translated well enough, though. I enjoyed the 2nd HC more, but it deserves mention the themes that were focused on in the first HC from the caste system that developed seemed ahead of its time, at least for comics anyways.

Revival HC 1 & 2 (24) - I almost forgot how much i enjoyed this series. Been waiting for the 3rd HC to come out before reading back through. Plan to start it soon.

Punisher Max TP 1 (16) - Born was just ok. That was definitely ground work for the main series which just continued to improve as it went along.

Sex TP 4 (6) - I keep buying this series because it's different. But that's about it. Nothing particularly excites me about it, but so far there's been enough to keep reading.

    77 + 57 = 134 for the year

i've had "o Canada" stuck in my head for days
i really enjoyed it while it lasted, it's intense, has great dialogue, and the art is excellent. the ending is, i don't know... kinda ambiguous? i literally said, a bit too loudly, on a bus full of people, "that's it?" maybe i just didn't want it to end. i sure hope BKV will return to this story some day (he says he might).

Undertaker 2 (~2 issues) - Great continuation of this new western. Bring on volume 3.

Ayak + Por 1 (~ 2 issues) - Nice comic. The stories aren't very strong, but the drawing are very nicely done.

Berentand 3 (~2 issues) - Pretty good installment in this series, in which we get to friends how strong a friendship between a jewish boy and 2 nazi jugend kids really is.

Ontboezemingen (~5 issues) - A book about a few women and their breasts. Olivier Pont tells intimate short stories, but keeps his full integrity about the subject. Excellent stuff!

Girl Crazy (3 issues) - Quite a disappointing read from Gilbert Hernandez. It's starts quite promising, but gets quite disastrous after the first issue. I expected a lot more, but what we get is quite a mess. Not recommended!

    February total: 44 issues

The more you read Born, the more nuance and subtleties you pull out and the better it gets. I thought it was just solid when I first read it, but now I consider it a masterpiece. It also informs a lot of the rest of the series, so I'd revisit it after every 3-4 arcs.

If you haven't already, check out the movie snowpiercer. It's really good. Chris Evans (captain America) plays main character
