There is also this story about McFarlane being pissed about Bendis leaving the title in order to write Ultimate Spider-Man, so I wonder how much of Bendis' plans was kept.

As for the issues themselves, they're... ok? I don't know what to say. It's just a lot of people usually sitting and Bendis talk. There is some setup for events to come, but I don't know if Niles continued them. However, the five issues I've read so far are not that bad. Bendis writes only dark and gruesome scenes that were clearly made with Wood's art in mind. Expect crazy psychopaths, nutty priests, suicide attempts, porn theaters, hobos, and a visually trippy battle between Spawn and the Violator. Wood's art is often great, although too confusing at times and I'm not sure that's always intentional.

I don't know if I'm going to continue reading it because I don't like anything by Niles I've read so far, and future issues feature Miracleman. Considering the year they were published, it would not surprise me if that character was only included to piss Neil Gaiman. But hey, Ashley Wood and Ben Templesmith draw the following eleven issues! And there's a cyborg gorilla! And... if I began reading the series, I should finish it too.

EDIT: Actually, Wood stayed until issue 10. Damn, more reasons to get the following issues!
Thinking back, I've realized all of Ashley Wood's comics are extremely talky, from Popbot to Automatic Kafka. He may very well have been chosen to adapt Metal Gear Solid more for his ability to make exposition scenes visually interesting than his style's resemblance to Shinkawa Yoji's. That's a funny observation about Miracleman and I'd probably agree with you on Steve Niles if I actually remembered anything of his I've read besides the first few 30 Days of Night volumes. I think I'll keep HS on my to-read list for sure. Thanks!

    Corto Maltese 13 (4 issues)
After 20 years since the last installment in the series by Hugo Pratt, who is no longer with us anymore, the new story of Corto Maltese by Juan Díaz Canales (Blacksad) and Rubén Pellejero takes us on a new adventure, this time to Alaska and Canada. Díaz Canales and Pellejero stayed true to the character, both in dialogue and art. Well done! And hopefully this will mean more episodes in the future. Oh yeah and buy those IDW editions to eventually get this one published as well!

Jason If You Steal (9 issues)
Gotta love me some Jason. This guy writes such funny little comic shorts. They're witty, absurd and touching stories. Especially Nothing was brilliant!

Jason What I Did (12 issues)
Fantastic stuff. Hey Wait was especially good. Brings you back to all the fun stuff you did as a kid. But things turn after Jon says Hey Wait to his friend. Sssshhh and The Iron Wagon were also pretty good, but not up there with Hey Wait.

Thorgal #15-20 (The Master of the Mountains - The Sun Sword) 12 issues)
Not a bad volume here. The Master of the Mountains was especially good with the time traveling. Good to see Kriss of Valnor back in The Sun Sword. Excellent series!!

    Two Brothers (10 issues)
Quite heavy stuff with lots of jealousy, misery and sadness. Very good read and among the best of 2015!

Superboy vol. 4 1-3: It's cool to see teenage superheroes act like teenagers.

Convergence: Blue Beetle 1-2: I like some of Lobdell's work (Doomed Arc, Psi-War, Red Hood/Arsenal) and I dislike some of his stuff too (Superboy, Kid Doomsday) His BB falls under the like category. He writes a good Vic Sage.

Superman/Batman 1-6: I just felt like going in my closet and reading something that hold close to my heart. And that was Public Enemies. As a kid, it introduced me to Captain Atom & Katana. I wanted to know more about those two ever since. Ed McGuinness is my favorite Superman artist. The way Superman and Batman play off of each other is brilliant. It also shows you why they're better when they work alongside each other and not fighting one another.

Jem and the Holograms (3 issues) - Highly recommended. Sophie Campbell's character acting and designs remain distinctively brilliant even as her style becomes more more refined for this licensed comic. Kelly Thompson's writing is quietly progressive and consistently charming throughout.
Princess Ugg. Vol 1. (4 issues) - A perfectly-pitched all-ages series that feels as adult as any of its genre competition. Everyone should give this a shot.

You're welcome. I've ended up buying the rest of the series, so I'll write my thoughts later this month.

I'm going to get an earlier start this time. My goal, as was the case last year, is to read 2016 comics.

I'd like to soon finish runs I started last year: The Invisibles, The 90s Valiant comics up until Unity, Hellboy/ BRPD and Jim Starlin's Cosmic Marvel (Warlock/ Silver Surfer/ Infinity Gauntlet).

Specific books I've been meaning to read include Fables, Lucifer, Sandman Mystery Theater, THUNDER Agents, Usagi Yojumbo, Nexus, Simonson's Thor, Stern's Avengers, Levitz' Legion, Grimjack, Moench & Sienkiewicz's Moon Knight, Eisner's The Spirit, Cole's Plastic Man, The Sixth Gun, Rucka and Simone's Wonder Woman, Stern's Doctor Strange, Kelly's Deadpool, Starman, the Wolfman/ Perez Teen Titans, Love and Rockets, The Sixth Gun and Atomic Robo. I've read some stories for each run, but I'd like to read those again from the beginning.
I've also been meaning to reread Miller's Daredevil, Cerebus 1-150, Johns's Flash, Gotham Central, Transmetropolitan, Bendis' Daredevil, 100 Bullets, Morrison's Batman, Sandman and Hickman's Avengers.

As for the books I've read so far...
Marvel Comics #1/ Marvel Mystery Comics #2-4:
Some of the most important comics ever courtesy of a library loan. It's essentially an anthology series of varying quality. Bill Everett's Namor is the highlight; easily the most advanced work and the most compelling lead. Carl Burgos' Human Torch has an entertaining primitive quality, and interesting challenges. Some of the rest is okay: some of it's kinda crummy.

Daredevil: Battling Jack Murdock #1-4: Excellent mini-series covering Daredevil's origin from the point of view of his doomed flawed father.

The Invisibles #17-25: The art's gotten consistently good, as Jiminez joins Yeowell. It's an epic and suitably weird showdown with some of the most effective mindgames in comics (something Morrison explores in his Batman and X-Men runs.)

    Ranma 1/2 #1-7: AKA TPB 1 AKA Chapters 1-14
Well-told action comedy, though the characters are a bit one-dimensional, and the stakes are kinda low.

Marvel Fanfare #18: Gorgeous pin-ups and an excellent Roger Stern/ Frank Miller Captain America collaboration.

Marvel Fanfare #31-32: I'm not sure why the DeMatteis Captain America two-parter wasn't in that title, but it's a solid story about a mysterious cult leader elevated by Frogman's comic relief.

Potter's Field #1-3/ Stone Cold: Excellent noir by Waid and Azacetta, with a guy who operates like a superhero in a slightly more realistic world. Great hook (an unknown guy tries to avenge those who died under mysterious circumstances in Potter's Field), though the single issue stories work better than the larger mystery.

    Total So Far: 31

    Best of the batch: MF`18
    Sincerely,
    Thomas Mets

Sign me up! I did this last year, and didn't make 1000, but got back into reading regularly and reading recommended stuff I'd never read before, because of this project. Stuff like Casanova, Locke and Key, Hellboy, Lord Baltimore, Starman, American Vampire, Shadowman, Gambit, Dial H For Hero, Sandman, Preacher and the awesome BATTLEPUG!

I'm not sure I'm make it to a 1000 this year either, but it's fun trying. This year, I'm hoping to post 'reviews' as I go. I really enjoyed other folks posts that did so.

Will be using this post as my master list and editing it like crazy. Right now I'm finishing up the Fables series.

Namor the Sub-Mariner, Marvel's oldest character, will have been published for 85 years in 2024. So where's my GOOD Namor anniversary ongoing, Marvel?

I would imagine it'd take 2-3 chapters to equal a western comic issues, since that's how many each title gets in a monthly Shonen Jump release (for example.) This is just about getting back on a regular reading schedule for me, so I'm sure whichever tracking method works for you is perfectly fine as well Same with re-reading books.

your welcome although we all should thank RadJack who had the original idea a year ago.

comics are comics, be it fumetti, bande dessinee, manga or whatever, time and space also doesn't matter, we are all just side effects of a 2 dimensional universe. You can read the same issue a thousand times and that counts since technically you've read 1000 comics

As for how you should count it: there are no set rules so if you feel like 3 manga chapters took the same amount of time to read as the latest Ms Marvel or Sex Criminals than I say count those 3 manga chapters as one.

I mainly read collected editions and lots of euro stuff and graphic novels. I just divide the number of pages by 22 and that's the number of issues I count. Sometimes that's more fair than at other times. Some comics you go through in a breeze, but then some euro stuff takes ages! So all in all it equals out to an acceptable average imo.

Either way this target gets me to actually pick up and read books again, rather than just buy, since I had't read a whole lot these past few months.
