Saga #1-18: Just a joy to read. Multiple fantastic characters. Tremendous storytelling/ character design.

    Captain America: White #1-5:
Neither obviously better or worse than other Loeb/ Sale characteristics. Gorgeous art. Good characters and tension between Cap and the Howling Commandos.

The Sandman: Overture #1-6: Yet another gorgeously illustrated saga. Worth the wait in terms of how long it had been since the rumors and the wait between issues.

Lio: There's a Monster in My Socks
    (8 Issues worth)
Cute and funny silent comic strip about a weird kid. Definite Addams Family vibe. It's about 220 pages, so I'll equate that to about 8 issues of content.

    Magnus & Nexus #1-2:
Solid crossover. Baron and Rude have a great take on Magnus, and combine his future sf world with Nexus pretty well.

Will Eisner's 3D Classics Featuring the Spirit:
Good selection of self-contained stories that pop with 3D glasses.

    And some Spider-Man:

Spider-Man Unlimited #1: The first part of Maximum Carnage is a bit mixed. There's a lot going on in Peter's life (including the funeral of his best friend) before he gets into a nasty fight with some bad guys. The cliffhanger's pretty good. DeFalco's take on Carnage is more silly than menacing. The back-ups are better with Mark Bagley depicting Cardiac during a fight with cops (possibly Terry Kavanagh's finest scripting effort), and an inventory story by Mike Barr and Jerry Bingham getting to what makes Spider-Man tic when Peter Parker suddenly wakes up as a high student with May and Ben still alive.

Edge of Spider-Verse #2: A success on pretty much every level. Probably the finest "pilot" in the Spider-Man comics since Amazing Fantasy #15.

Uncanny X-Men #346: Spider-Man and Jonah stumble into the events of the X-Men books in an issue that seems devoid of X-Men. It works pretty well as a standalone, with great art by Joe Mad with Spider-Man trying to impart the lesson of power and responsibility to an angry mutant, while Jonah encounters the big bad of the X-Men comics.

Tangled Web #5-6: Great standalone about what drives the Rhino. First time I read it I was disappointed that the high concept (Rhino gets smart) wasn't reached until the second part, but the first part gives a great take on what it's like moment to moment for the Rhino, who needs his heart broken before he takes a major risk. I can definitely see why it's on "Best of" lists.

Trial of Venom one-shot: Good one-shot with a solid plot involving an A-list Spider-Man foe, and the differences between Spider-Man and Daredevil, something Peter David had explored very well before.
    Total So Far: 77

Best of the Batch: Saga 12-18. It's hard to determine the best part of the series, but this has a great new character (the writer Quietus), an excellent showdown with most of the forces convering on the same place and the standard awesome concepts fully realized (hallucinogen inducing meats, two of Lying Cat's best moments)
    Sincerely,
    Thomas Mets

I think I'll join you all this year as my backlog dosn't stop growing so this thread/challenge might help me get it at least a little bit under control.

    Gundam Origins Volume 2 by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko (~420 pgs/30 = 14 Issues)
Another great volume, igniting, potentially a new found love affair with Manga, cinematic story telling, charecters with actual human flaws and engaging military skirmishes mean I can't wait to pick up volume 3.

Batman The Black Mirror by Scott Snyder, Jock and Francesco Francavilla (Detective Comics 871-881, 10 Issues)
Some great interweaving short stories here, Dick Grayson in the cowl is always a good time, Fancavilla does an amazing job with the Jim Gorden pages, adds just the right level of creepiness and horror to the proceedings.

Wonder Woman by George Perez Omnibus (Issues #1-6, 6 Issues)
The open arc of George Perez run on Wonder Woman, a run that draws heavily on on the Greek Mythology and while very wordy a times an entertaining read.

Constantine: The Hellblazer by James Tynion IV, Ming Doyle and Riley Rossmo (Issues #1-5, 5 Issues)
New series by new creators, jumped on board for Rossmo's art and dissapointingly someone else is on Art duties for the middle portion of this opening arc but whilst Rossmo is doing the art the book is every bit as gorgeous as I had hoped it would be.
The story suffers from some pacing issues but Constantine is a horny, drunken swearing, ******* who spends the entire 5 issues trying to con someone else into do his job for him. As long as Rossmo stays on the book I'll stick around for arc number 2.

10 days in 35 Issues, not a bad start.

    i'm joining this year too!
since i have next to no budget to buy as much as i used to, i'm going to read the hell out of my long long backlog, both physical and digital.

    so far i've read:
Echo by Terry Moore (30 issues) - enjoyed it quite a lot, read in two sittings
Deadpool by Daniel Way: The Complete Collection Volume 3 (about 20 issues, i think?) - well, what can i say, i know some of you dislike Deadpool or Way's run, but this is kinda my guilty pleasure, i enjoy this kind of silly fun from time to time, although can't read too much of it in one sitting.
Rat Queens (5 issues) - tried it last night before going to sleep and swallowed the first TPB without even realizing it. fun!
    Animal Man #5
Giant Days by John Allison #10 - my hands-down favorite ongoing series
    Vision by Tom King #2
    Klaus by Grant Morrison #2

so, that makes what, 59. nothing to write home about, but not that bad for me actually.

As of yesterday I'm at 115. A lot of new releases and a small chunk from my backlog. Chew Omnivore Vol. 5 was great, I'm looking forward to the last volume. Lazarus The First Collection was awesome, I didn't know very much going in. I definitely recommend checking that series out (looks like the second hardcover is out soon-ish).

I'm giving it a try this year, not for the 1000-book record, but to see how close I get to it and to keep tabs on what I read. On with the count!

    Week 1

    What if V2 9, 11 (2)
    Marvel Holiday Special 1991, 1992 (4)
Tif et Tondu Integrale 7 (6)
    Cleopatra: Macao, Sombras (4)
    Asterix: Missing Scroll (2)
X-Men Epic Collection 12 (21, with 4 double sized issues)

    Total for the week: 39

    Saga #19-32:
Continuation of an excellent series. The passage of time keeps shaking things up in interesting ways.

    Captain America (Brubaker/ Epting) #1-9, 11-14:
The Winter Solider arc. One of the best-told Marvel comics ever.

    Rai (Classic Valiant) #1-5:
A reluctant warrior in a relatively fully realized future society. Not bad, although there are more interesting takes on the subject matter.

    Hard Boiled #1-3

Over the top material that's a good mix of Miller and Darrow, as a hyperviolent robot is unaware of his true nature.

Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot #1-2
Great project for Darrow (interesting robots VS giant monster), although unique for Miller, who seems to do a parody of Silver Age and Japanese monster movies.

    Gotham Central #1-5

Excellent opening volume showing what the cops are up to while Batman's doing his thing.

    Gotham Central #6-10

Even better volume as Renee Montaya's life collapses, when her secrets are outed, and her enemies start dying.

    And some Spider-Man...

    Web of Spider-Man #101-103/ Spectacular Spider-Man #201-203/ Spider-Man #35-37/ Amazing Spider-Man #378-380/ Spider-Man Unlimited #2
    Maximum Carnage

    Marvel Team-Up #101

    Ultimate Spider-Man Annual #3

    Total so far: 139

Best of the batch: The Winter Solider arc of Captain America
    Sincerely,
    Thomas Mets

New to the forums and I thought this would be a great place to start! Plus, also a great way to keep track of what I read and plow through my backlog.

So far this year I have read:

Y - The Last Man 1 -60: First time reading this series and I absolutely loved it! I simply could not put it down, highly recommended.

Hack/Slash: My First Maniac 1-4 Another first and I enjoyed this as well, enough to dive in to the rest of the series at some point.

    Total Comics read in 2016:

    64
