While I do see the similarities between A New Hope and The Force Awakens, TFA is not an exact copy nor as much of a remake/retelling as many make it out to be. And it does fit a thematic choice to kind of hammer home a point that those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it. I just hope that now that they have set up the continuation, they move further away from that choice as the past is revealed and people will work to not repeat it.

Curious about those aliens with Daisy. While the other two-the Admiral and some tech quy-were of course in TFA, I thought that pilot was killed in TFA.

Then again, Star Wars isn't above simply reusing costumes to save money. You can see somebody wearing the exact same costume as Greedo in Jabba's palace in ROTJ for instance. So maybe just a guy from the same species.

The Princes visiting the set also revealed the return of the A-wings, the fighters seen in ROTJ and the DROIDS cartoons. However, they seem to now have an inverted color scheme which brings to mind Obi-Wan Kenobi's starfighter from AOTC.

I think these photos, as well as the ones Rian himself posted, are in some sort of ship hanger. One thing we didn't see in TFA were any Resistance capital ships (Although there were some indeterminate ones orbiting the Republic planet, probably part of their fleet).

It's not an exact one-to-one copy. But it does copy everything from Star Wars (as in that first movie) to the point that it basically is a remake. If you've seen Star Wars, and remember it, nothing in The Force Awaken should have been a surprise at all. The weird thing about The Force Awakens is how it takes the structure of the original movie, and then fucks it up by taking the big middle action beat of the original film and moving it to the end.

2014 interview with Rian Johnson on Girls in Hoodies. I remember there's a little Star Wars talk here. Cant find the video anymore, guess because Grantland is dead now, but the podcast is still up...which is what that link is.

Entertainment Tonight - EXCLUSIVE: Oscar Isaac Talks 'Star Wars' Characters Getting 'Tested Intensely' in 'Episode VIII'

ET's Carly Steel caught up with The Force Awakens star Oscar Isaac, who's about to appear in another big budget film -- X-Men: Apocalypse', out May 27 -- and the actor told us that when it comes to fighting for the rebellion in a galaxy far, far away, he's just happy to be "around."

When asked about how his character [MINOR SPOILERS] living to see another day in Episode VII (Poe Dameron reportedly was initially going to die in the film) will affect the followup chapter, 37-year-old Isaac responded, "Well, I'm around, first of all, which is nice."

"The new additions to the cast, like Laura Dern and Benicio Del Toro, they're incredible actors and Rian [Johnson, Episode VIII's director], his sensibility is one of smaller films," the Golden Globe winner explained. "So, within all of the bigness and the epic scope of the film, it does feel like we're getting to find some of that nuance and that intimacy."

Additionally, Isaac revealed his character will get in on a lot more of the action, which is set to push the characters to their limits, when the movie hits theaters in December 2017.

"Poe, he gets to be more a part of the story, and all of the characters in the film, they get tested, intensely," he said. "It's a lot of conflict in it, which is great."

Indie Revolver - John Williams Talks ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ and Rey’s Father

In between the music the soft spoken Williams addressed the enthusiastic audience, playfully recalling writing his Luke and Leia piece as a love theme before knowing any better. It was within one of these breaks in the performance that Williams discussed being asked by Kathleen Kennedy to score Rian Johnson’s currently in production, Episode VIII. Williams confided that he wasn’t sure he was up to it, but left the door open by saying that he doesn’t want anyone else to write music for Rey.

Speak of Rey, Williams also briefly spoke about her father. No, he doesn’t know who Rey’s absentee pop is, but he has an opinion, “I never asked J.J. Abrams who Rey’s father is, but I think it’s Luke Skywalker. Your guess is as good as mine, though.”

I hope this movie immediately takes place right after The Force Awakens and not a few years like normal. I want Luke to be hesitant because he feels like he failed society by creating the Knights of Ren. Then later out he dies in a similar way that Obi-Wan did in A New Hope. However he says to Rey before he's killed by Kylo-Ren "It's your turn now".
    I plan on dying tonight!!!

The first day of filming video a few months ago showed pretty much the same stuff from TFA's end but from another angle, so I think there will be a very short gap between the films if any really (The films are also coming out every two years as opposed to the 3 year gaps between the first six episodes so there's less aging).

As for Luke dying, we sort of had an Obi-Wan style death with Han already-and Luke probably didn't really create the Knights of Ren, he mainly blames himself for Ben/Kylo's betrayal. The knights probably were in Snoke's employ, and Kylo ascended to become their master or something.

I wonder if that pic of Rey is simply from TFA's production, or something new? The snow seems to indicate Starkiller base so I'm guessing it's old.

Epicstream - Carrie Fisher Cuts Down New York Comic-Con Appearance Due to Star Wars Production

Carrie Fisher was originally slated to attend all four days of New York Comic-Con this year, but recently had to cut down her number of days in her appearance to Sunday only. According to the official NYCC social media pages, "Star Wars Production" is the reason for Fisher's schedule change. The most likely scenario is that Fisher will be doing reshoots for Episode VIII, which is a normal thing for films with big budgets to have.

Some are stating that it's proof that it'll copy the plot from ESB or something like that, but I think he means tonally. Some of the actors from AOTC and ROTS likewise compared their films to ESB as well.

USA Today - The most must-see films of 2017, from 'Beauty and the Beast' to 'Star Wars'

Remember that Star Wars: The Force Awakens cliffhanger with new heroine Rey (Daisy Ridley) bringing Jedi master Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) his old lightsaber on a remote intergalactic island? Writer/director Rian Johnson is picking up right where they left off in the beginning of the Star Wars saga’s still-untitled next chapter. “I don’t want to skip ahead two years,” Johnson says. “I want to see the very next moment of what happens.” How Rey and Luke relate to each other is the key relationship in Episode VIII, and Johnson says “a large part of the movie” will be spent addressing why Luke’s there and what he’ll do next. Like Luke, Rey has been pulled into a bigger world by connecting with the Force, “but part of what’s she’s dealing with is the realization that she has this power and this gift,” Johnson adds. “She’s taking her first step to coming to terms with this thing inside her that she never knew was there and is just starting to reveal its potential.” Another cliffhanger: How General Leia might figure in the film in light of Carrie Fisher’s death last month.
