Cary Nord and Tomas Giorello live up to that tradition in the earlier Dark Horse Conan material too. Then there is always the Frazetta covers series DH did to, so no shortage of great Conan cover art out there if you are looking for it. I figured my favorite Cimmerian would be well represented, so I went a different route.

Yeah, grew up on old Conan magazines my uncle had (Saga, Savage Sword, etc.). So many great covers out there, was hard to choose. There's another Jusko one in my head, but for the life of me can't remember (he's holding a broken sword over some bodies, of course that hardly narrows it down).

Tough one for me, since Marvel's Conan book made me a comic collector. But I am not going with Conan, since I just used Conan #1 a few weeks ago and my favorite BWS Conan cover was posted in this thread. Then there are the great Frazetta covers, but they were really done for paperback books and just re-used for comics, didn't fit for me. Neal Adams did some great Conan covers, but they won't beat that iconic Batman cover posted. I started looking at other artists and books, Buscema, Gil Kane, Steranko, all had some good stuff. But then I remembered the other R E Howard creation and how great the Severin siblings art was on the first issues. So here is an awesome Kull the Conqueror cover.

(I almost went with the amazing Ploog cover, but the 'Sword' theme gave this the edge)

That's my namesake, Cody Starbuck, from Howard Chaykin. Star*Reach was the anthology in which he appeared, predating Dominic Fortune. Essentially, it was a reworking of his Ironwolf series, at DC's Weird Worlds. Dominic Fortune was a reworking of Chaykin's Atlas/Seaboard pulp hero, The Scorpion (which came after Cody Starbuck). All of these would set the stage for his masterpiece, American Flagg.

Cody Starbuck was the reason George Lucas specifically asked for Chaykin to do the Marvel Star Wars adaptation. In the forward to the First Comics graphic novel edition of the first American Flagg story ("Hard Times"), Michael Moorcock remarked that he always felt Han Solo owed a lot to Cody Starbuck, right down to his choice in clothes.

Cody Starbuck appeared in Star*Reach #1 and 4 and a single eponymous comic. He then appeared in a serialized story in Heavy Metal, vol. 5, issues 2-6 (May 1981-Sept 1981).

    SuperCooper shows a lack:

That is Philip Javert, not Jacques Duquesne, in the Swordsman costume, and Philip never had moustache.

And it was the 90s. Everybody was wearing pouches.
