Jim Shooter: I did not write Avengers #200

AVENGERS #200, in which Ms. Marvel was kidnapped, drugged, and forcibly impregnated, and after giving birth to a reincarnation of her rapist, went off with him in a happy daze.
The writers on the story are listed as Jim Shooter, David Michelinie, Bob Layton, and George Pérez but it’s been noted that in the years since, no one has actually taken credit for coming up with the story.

Jim Shooter confirmed that he’s wiped the entire incident from his memory:

I found my copy of Avengers #200. I read it. I agree with the consensus, it’s heinous. But, I don’t remember much about how it got that way.

I am credited not only as Editor in Chief but as one of the co-plotters. However, I didn’t see anything in the book that jogged my memory.
No bits that I remember suggesting. No corrections of the sort I might have made to a plot passed before me.

But I did see many things I would have had changed if I’d seen the plot. For instance, leaving aside the Ms. Marvel mess for the nonce:
Iron Man thinks it’s okay for the weird, mysterious child to be given a “laser torch” and electronic equipment so he can build a machine. What?! As the massive machine is being assembled, no one bothers to question what it is or does. What?! Trouble ensues. No kidding, really? Good grief.

Shooter offers a few hypotheses about the story’s origin — a feud between Michelinie and Chris Claremont being one possible motivation — and hints that Jim Salicrup might know more.

There is perhaps some comfort all these years later in knowing that Shooter offers a flat-out apology:

But, in those days, in any case, the buck stopped at my desk. I take full responsibility. I screwed up. My judgment failed, or maybe I wasn’t paying enough attention. Sorry. Avengers #200 is a travesty.

Glad someone took responsibility for this. As a young lad of 14 at the time, I was REALLY looking forward to the big Anniversary issue; there was plenty of precedent that these issues were game changers and all out actioners.

And then we got...this. Probably the worst anniversary issue I've ever read. So bad on so many levels.

Quite a relief that nowadays, issues starring the comicbook character Carol Danvers, are so good on so many levels.

Linda Carter, Georgia Jenkins, and Christine Palmer all study to be nurses.

Marshall Michaels asks Linda Carter to marry him but insists that she give up on being a nurse. When all of the city's power goes out
Ben Jenkins (Georgia's brother) and Rocky try to hold the hospital's generator hostage. When Ben listens to his sister and tries to stop Rocky he is shot.

Linda turns down Marshall's marriage proposal to become a nurse.

Shanna The She-Devil #1 Dec 1972
"Shanna the She-Devil."
Shanna O'Hara is the daughter of a diamond miner. Born in Africa, she spent her childhood in the jungles of Zaire.

After Shanna's father accidentally kills her mother, Shanna moves back to the United States to live with relatives.
Shanna grows up to become an accomplished athlete..

..and then becomes a zoologist. She returns to Africa and patrols the jungle living freely with the land.

Avengers #221

Why is ROM, a licenced character, on that cover? They can't reprint that without editing it, so it was a dumb move.

Yeah. Just using 'Spaceknight' feels incomplete to me.

Funny thing is, of course, most of that lineup did eventually join the team.

Wouldn't surprise me if BMB took a look at this cover which then inspired him to form 'New Avengers'.

Fantastic Four #129 Dec 1972
"The Frightful Four...Plus One!" Part 1 of 2. Guest-starring Medusa and Thundra (first appearance).
The Fantastic Four have returned to the Baxter Building after finishing their adventure with the Mole Man last issue.
But things don't remain quiet for long as Johnny surprisingly announces his intention to go to the Great Refuge! And in a flash the Human Torch departs for the Hidden Land to see Crystal!
Moments later another bombshell drops when Agatha Harkness informs Reed and Sue that she can no longer take care of young Franklin.
After all the outbursts, Ben decides to go for a walk across town to clear his head. However, he walks right into a battle between the past and present members of the Frightful Four!
At an abandoned construction site, Ben Grimm and Medusa fight for their lives against the Sandman, Trapster, Wizard, and Thundra!
