Exclusive usually means they just can't do work for the opposing company (in this case Marvel) it doesn't really effect their ability to work on indie projects for the most part.

I think a lot of writers would be more hesitant to sign exclusive contracts if it meant they couldn't do independent work.

That has traditionally been the case but the more recent ones have supposedly been more strict. There are some allowances for already pre-planned work, but otherwise they want new creator owned stuff to go through Vertigo. Originally Posted by GreenLanternRanger
