(Personal canon is that Immortus had the Avengers under mind control, too, just enough to make them totally ok with what he'd done to Carol.)

Immortus's son Marcus was the one that impregnated Carol, and damn you people for making me remember that story.

Veranke's a Skrull, and as some examples have shown before and since, Skrulls aren't as bound by anatomical gender as most other species are, so she would be somewhat more plausible than Carol.

Scary thought in context to Loomworld, what if the baby was an infant Karn? It would certainly explain why he looks so different in comparison to the other inheritors.
