Default Does anyone else get annoyed at the jolly come latelies?

This will no doubt come across to some as selfish nonsense but having grown up reading comics and being told by my peers that they are 'for kids', I now get annoyed at those same people telling me how great the 'new character' Deadpool is and wearing their retro Marvel t-shirts as if they need to prove their fake geek-chic.

I may have ranted a little stronger than intended and I do love that the characters I've grown up with getting new found fans and exposure in new mediums but please, don't talk to me like your an instant expert and I know nothing because I don't brag about being in the cinema opening night. My honest and deep seated love of those characters and those comics are ingrained over years of staying up late reading cover to cover.

Nope, that's nonsensical gate-keeper talk. None of this "belongs" to you. If other people are interested in something you like, that should make you happy, not all defensive that they're "not liking it right".

Dude, you can dig a hole thinking this way.

I didn't buy the first Ramones record when it came out. According to your logic, how big of a fan do I get to be?

As long as no one's trying lord their newfound fandom over you, where's the harm? More people enjoying a thing I like is just exciting for me. Heck, it enhances my pleasure in the thing. I love seeing people discover a movie I love and become entranced with it, or get all worked up over a character I like. I want people to get excited.

    Angilasman wants an explanation!:

    It's "Johnny Come Lately."
Well, they're happy, but only recently.

Since posting this thread and reading the replies, it has really made me think and realise that I was wrong. It's fine that I have my own history with these things but as you say, I don't own them. If someone was to become a fan of my writing in 20 years time, I wouldn't want someone who has read me from the start to do anything but encourage.
We all found our way to comics in one way or another and that shared experience should be a great thing and nothing else.

So, thanks for your comments. I will eat this humble pie gladly and truthfull, I always thought it was Jolly come lately! Damn, how many things can I get wrong in a lifetime?!

I give you one gold star, and the right to scoff whenever someone says "Oh, stuff on the internet never changes anyone's mind."

I'm 55 and still trying to work that one out myself.

I am absolutely certain that I'm right until I'm sure I'm wrong.

I suppose I came by this internet handle honestly.

I can see where your coming from, but most of the people who like to lord over people about how in the know they are about the big new thing are usually just insufferable anyway. Most people just like the thing because they like the thing and that's that.
