Been thinking about how I'd prefer a 'unity team' to look over the last couple of days, so, here it is:
Captain Marvel - Co-Leader: Long-time Avenger, proven leadership qualities, comfortingly public identity, more than strong enough to be the team's resident 'brick', oh yeah and she's my favourite solo hero. Look, it's a biased roster, I make no bones of this.
Storm - Co-Leader: I find I like Ororo more in theory than in practice; she sounds like an awesome character but most of her appearances don't measure up to the impression I get of her in my head. Nevertheless, she's one of the biggest guns in the non-outlaw X-Men and has the experience and grandstanding persona to lead on the field. Honestly, her and Carol alone could probably get the job done against most threats by themselves, but I gotta pad the roster out further.
The Vision: Robots deserve representation just as much as mutants! Plus Vision's a classic Avenger with plenty of ties to the team, yet he's not such a big name that he overshadows the rest of the team the way I find Cap. America or Iron Man sometimes do. Extremely versatile powers and skills, also.
Rogue: One of the less necessary picks, if I'm honest, but it gives us a little continuity with the current Uncanny Avengers squad, and if Rogue's willing to join one unity squad, why not another? Plus of course the devil in me wants to put her and Carol on the same team and see how awkward it gets, even if Carol's post-Enemy Within brain snafu makes her more at peace over their history.
Nightcrawler: And to counterbalance that awkwardness, it's the one X-Man who can make friends with anyone. His BAMFing makes him a good forward scout, but really I just want Kurt being Kurt to make the talky scenes sparkle. Plus it adds a non-human looking mutant to the line-up, which I feel was an unfortunate lack in Uncanny A.
Domino: Like I said, it's a biased roster. Plus, I do believe every team needs a low/no-powers spy/ninja/assassin type, and there's nothing Black Widow could do here that Neena can't do just as well. Also potentially another firecracker in the talky scenes, assuming she's the same fast-mouthed sleazy wild-child Kyle & Yost turned her into.
Ms. Marvel: Ideally I'd like Kamala to 'graduate' from a brief spell in another, smaller team before making her 'big leagues' debut here, but she should still be recognizably Kamala, and be so super excited to get a little ID card with a big 'A' on it that she won't stop shrieking and bouncing around. Also adds an Inhuman to the team. Also adds EMBIGGENING~ and hopefully some drama where Carol's kinda over-protective and keeps reflexively trying to keep Kamala out of the hot spots.
Ghost Rider (Robbie Reyes): It's still surprising to me that the AVENGErs have never had a spirit of VENGEance on the roll-call. This seems as fine a time as any to change that. Robbie being fairly young and still new to his powers ought to give him a natural rapport with Ms. Marvel, and while I admittedly have fallen behind in reading his solo series and so don't know what the status quo is between Robbie and Eli (his bonded spirit), there's always one 'ticking time bomb' team member and that works best when it's actually a really nice bloke at heart who just can't help but be dangerous. Plus the G.R. being a mystic/spiritual entity gives the team a big gun against magical threats (no calling Dr. Strange on his days off) and wouldn't it just rule to have him deploy by driving his flaming car out the back of a Quinjet in midair?
Forge: The IT guy. Hey, he's not doing anything else right now, every Avengers team goes through millions of dollars of equipment which presumably someone has to keep working, and I like him.
It's a pretty solid, varied team, and not one white man among them. Unless you count Vision previously being Jim Hammond or something.
