So we have a bit of Spawn news coming out of Todd's panel at SDCC 2024 - https://aiptcomics.com/2024/07/25/sd...farlane-spawn/

The first is Todd's praise regarding Rat City which just reached a fourth printing and an action figure of Peter Cairn is coming soon. Super happy to see Rat City take off and I'll echo that sentiment and if you are wondering which New U book to pick up let that book be Rat City. I hope Todd keeps allowing that team to cook.

Second, Todd talked about the new books to come including No Home Here, the upcoming Violator mini starting next month, Deadly Tales of Gunslinger and news on two titles which are a She Spawn ongoing that will be done by Gail Simone and a Freak series which Todd says on that "What if the Joker became a hero instead of a villain?"

Movie news we have a title for the movie, King Spawn though no relation to the current series of the same name, and that they are on the hunt for a director.

Catching up on the month of Spawn books, I'll echo the sentiment regarding the Monolith mini as it gets a thumbs down from me as well. This could have easily been told during the Planet Eaters arc in The Scorched when Monolith became the leader for a bit. The last few pages were interesting, but I came away not caring about the title character and the ending felt like a scramble to have the mini be worth something as it spent way too much time across its three issues in having Omega and Monolith fight so much. Even if by the mini's own admission that it isn't about Monolith's origins, how it doesn't have the time to tell that and set the character up for the future across three issues is beyond me. Misery this month was also a muddled issue for me as it felt all over the place - it wants to be set during current continuity which feels more like over-compensating for the fact that this project has been done for a long while now, it also wants to go back to a particular story point from the main book almost a hundred issues ago, Cyan's friend doesn't question much about Cyan teleporting out of the blue a couple of times, a no name shadow player tries to nab Cyan, and the domestic abuse subplot feels so out of place and distant now. It is a mess that at the halfway point needs focus and fast. As for the new U book this past month, Spawn Kills Every Spawn, it was horrible with it honestly being a 5 page story stretched out to 20 and I honestly cannot believe this is a 5 issue mini-series. While the art is impressive in its kineticism and detail, the humor doesn't work (their is a Daniel Day Lewis/There Will Be Blood reference joke from almost two decades ago and DDL hasn't done a film in years) and this easily should have been a one-shot story. While I didn't care for the previous Spawn Kills volumes, I was hoping with Layman on it this would be different but nope. Hopefully, the Violator mini will be good.

As for the ongoings, King Spawn took a turn with its story that makes me wonder about the timeline of events between it and the main book as we see the return of Cygor who I wonder how Al has him given he was with Greenworld previously, Rat City had a down issue after everything, as it focuses on Quinlan which was necessary at this point and thought it was a good issue again and The Scorched and main book again were solid reads. The former sees Bishop and Priest on a mission for Wynn to capture a character whose powerset, the character doesn't have right now, makes me wonder what Wynn is really cooking and the latter catches us up on the status of Greenworld in all of this as I wonder a bit about Downing, Spawn and Lyra look to officially team up, and Wynn has some additional agents to put into play that includes another brand new character and a returning character.

I mean king spawn 37 previews hints his body was revived over one year. King Spawn is like detective comics spawn kills every spawn is still new so give it time the new character was from the scorched connecting covers early issues when it debuted.

So many of these books are style over substance it seems. Let’s just toss crap against the wall and see what sticks, I imagine. It’s like more quantity over quality. The book-load needs to be quelled some. Do we really need a She-Spawn book when Scorched is pretty much a She-Spawn and Friends comic? I got a feeling that Sam and Twitch will be over at issue 12.

I really think that Mini or Maxi-series should be the focus outside of Spawn and Scorched, just let those two be the main books to push the main narrative along the lines of say, Amazing and Spectacular Spider-Man, and King Spawn be the Web of Spider-Man, format to use a 90s reference.

Right now, Spawn and Scorched are the best titles out of the line in my opinion. They are perfection in pushing the narrative along.

Most of the time. But it takes a while for both to come along unless things are different she-spawn is the full origin story of Jessica priest apparently and the hood are fine you might be ant to re read them to get a presective change. Also freak getting his own series too. She-spawn is currently working for wynn at the moment so it is more of an ensemble cast.
King spawn is said to be detective comics to spawn

Oh, I agree that the line needs to be culled. For my money, just keep the main book, Scorched, and Rat City. Each of these are unique and solid reads and Rat City in particular is what we need to see more of as anyone can jump into that without worrying about the baggage of the other books which can't be said for Monolith or Misery. Its actually why I'm excited about No Home Here because that feels unique too along with playing with the bi-monthly format. Gunslinger and King Spawn can easily be cut, especially the latter that doesn't add anything other than ensuring Todd writes a Spawn book starring Al and I know Gunslinger is Todd's current personal baby but 30+ issues in I'm still not sure why this needed to be its own book let alone an ongoing. Palmiotti's Gunslinger set during the Wild West period is something I will read, but this just feels like busy work to me.

I think Sam & Twitch will end at issue 12 or so too, especially given the turn that just happened in the most recent issue that feels like we are headed to the second half of the story now and that is fine with me. Doing more minis and maxis are fine and if anything could be a proving ground especially if a project really catches on then promote it to an ongoing if feasible.

Perhaps She Spawn getting an ongoing could be because Scorched could be under new leadership if Redeemer permanently stays as the leader by the time that comes out in much the same way Gunslinger bowed out of the Scorched and stayed on his own book. Just a guess, but a maxi-series would suit She Spawn just fine to start.

I doubt it king spawn and gunslinger is still selling well there is also focus and the others they aren’t gonna full anything.

People are enjoying Gunslinger and king spawn for the majority which you guys didn’t know also Thomas the editor said gunslinger’s origins form 174-175 is still canon deadly tales just expands on this.

I seen people enjoy the minis too mostly. Also king spawn is dectective comics as Thomas healy said.
Also She-Spawn is an origin story for Jessica according to gail.

I think the mini-series have not been good so far and I have dropped off on them. Spawn, Scorched, and Rat City have been pretty good albeit some hiccups with the main book here and there. I was enjoying Gunslinger up until after the events of Spawn #350. Ever since that point, it feels like they have been treading water with Gunslinger and the book has lost its touch. I hope they can get this book back to where it was and give it some focus. Not sure how Tales is going to affect the main Gunslinger book, but hope it doesn't screw things up.

She Spawn could be good if done right, but even with that book, I fear that She Spawn can't carry a book for too long either. Leaving her be the centerpiece of The Scorched would have been the smart choice overall.

Guess we will see what they do with these books.

Tales is an origin story and she-spawn is an origin story so I wouldn’t worry too much

I’m hoping that they would give Priest another name to be called. Having the characters in world call her She-Spawn sounds so…. Weird. There has to have been previous female Spawns throughout the ages. If they do give her, her own book, be an ongoing or mini, maybe they’ll just call it Priest. She-Spawn makes sense for marketing, I get. It lets us, the consumers know exactly what the name is for (She-Hulk, She-Dragon) but it feels cringe reading it like that in story for the Spawn universe.

I totally agree with what you said previously regarding Misery. It really reads and fills out of place with the other ongoing books. For it to take place after Terry getting shot and Granny being abducted… it feels very off. I think it would feel more organic if it took place within the 6 month time jump. This third issue… I’m ready for this mini to end, lol. I appreciate expanding the lore, but Misery, as it is written now, couldn’t be an ongoing.

Rat City is gold. So far, not one bad issue. They keep this up it may outpace the main book. Peter has many similarities to Al, but more than enough currently to stand on his own without feeling like Al 2 point Oh.

Gotta keep the she-spawn brand name and it is an origin story according to Gail Simone

Yeah Deadly Tales of the Gunslinger is going to be very interesting when it comes out and will be a true test of the strength of that character as Palmiotti wants Gunslinger fans to get both books based on this interview he did last year on the project - https://comicon.com/2023/11/28/a-tot...he-gunslinger/

I think if it pops off and both series do well sales-wise, I think Todd should consider expanding the character further into say an animated series. There aren't too many of those especially set in the Wild West and I think that can be pretty cool. I've honestly been wanting the main Gunslinger book to grab me, but while that honestly hasn't happened for me yet, I still see the glimmers of something there that can. It just needs focus. I mean the Taylor stuff in becoming an angel or Heaven character should have long been done by now and remember Focus, Carnivore, and Saboteur? Yeah me neither.

The She-Spawn moniker is interesting because even when Nyx was a Spawn for a bit, in continuity she is referred to as She Spawn for that period. At this point, it is more of a marketing point like you, Blanks, and Toxin said so not much there. I just hope if other female Spawns are introduced that they have to come up with a better name(s) for them. I remember that screen in Gunslinger #10 with the various Spawns out there like Dino-Spawn, and I believe two of them are females so they are out there and can't be She-Spawns either as I like to think in the cases of Jessica and Nyx that their She-Spawn moniker is because of their connection to Al and his power. Or again just easy branding lol.

I also read the recent issue of Misery and yeah I'm at that point too for it to be done.

Yeah todd likes to focus on revenge first then other stuff later and focus is getting his own spin off that is more of a todd problem then and in general.
