Default Do you think it would be a good idea for Disney to buy DC?

Let's be honest, Disney has been known to buy whatever franchise we like. First Marvel and then Star Wars. In both cases there were pros and cons to them buying them. First they bought Marvel which did wonders for the movie's but ruined their TV shows quality and even force them to have the comics represent the movies. Then Disney bought Star Wars and again, it did wonders for the movies, but they canceled the Clone Wars show and even worse, they ret coned the Expanded Universe. However it would be cool to have Marvel and DC merge.

Do you think it would be a good idea?

    My answer

Plus that would give them a monopoly on the comic book and Super hero business.....not sure that's legal.

Even if it were possible, neither Disney, DC, or Marvel would want that to happen. Disney already has Marvel. They wouldn't want to acquire DC, which is essentially a redundant, competing franchise for them. They would be forced to divide resources between the 2, and it would be very hard not to put out a property that could potentially cannibalize the sales of another. Both companies would suffer because of that. Everyone is happier right where they are (although I imagine Disney/Marvel is a little happier with their situation compared to WB/DC).

it would be bad for everyone

    1) Disney would have to buy WB lock stock and barrel to get at DC; and even the Mouse can't leverage that kind of money around easily
    2) unless DC's market share entirely collapses in the next few years; DC and Marvel combined would make up an unacceptable monopoly in the comic book market
    3) Disney is not known for playing well with others; and DC's got a gordian knot of issues in relation to the estates of various older properties (WW, BL etc), deals with seperate companies (milestone) and gentlemen's agreements (robinson & Starman characters, Gaiman & The Endless) that disney's liable to ignore
    4) related to 2 is the fact that Disney won't be able to support all the marvel and DC comics; so odds are DC will be pared down to some core books (AC, Tec, Batman, Superman etc) with alot of the weirder stuff relgated
    5) just as DC have treated Fawcett, Charlton and Quality characters as whipping boys for decades; so too would Marvel treat DC characters

I'll leave you one last thing for the week, and it's not Marvel news, but certainly big industry new. This past Saturday, DC Comics unveiled the full picture of the lineup for their Rebirth initiative -- do you have any thoughts to share on their plans?

I think the entire industry is better when DC is healthy.

No, because the price tag would mean a DC who does 8/10 as Batman books, 1/10 as Superman and the rest for the DCU.

    NO.

Now if we are talking certain characters, sure but not the entire company.

As for Axel's reply-he is right-a healthy DC forces competition to step up the game.

Right now Dc is making too easy for Marvel in some aspects.

No, because eventually Disney would ruin DC comics even more if possible. They have already put their stench on the Marvel Universe by forcing the Inhumans and putting the X-Men into the shadows. As well as forcing new characters and old characters of color/gender for future film franchises. I wish they would leave the comics alone.

No. DC is owned by Warner. I really don't see this ever happening and it would be just terrible for the Comics Industry. Competition makes it a lot healthier than Marvel basically having a monopoly.

No. It anything, the Empire--I mean, Disney--would be better off following the old American way of buying out a competitor and then shutting him down. No more competition with Marvel. No more Big Two. There would be just The Big One.

That wouldn't mean that Batman and Superman wouldn't continue, but don't look for much beyond them.

Disney probably already has enough superheroes. The marvel superheroes doing ok in the movies is probably not bec of Disney but maybe bec of the genius of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.

Also, say what you will about WB but they are a lot better at getting their Cartoons TV shows out on DVD then Disney is (still waiting for season sets of Gravity Falls)

But yea, WB & DC may not be perfect, but that doesn't mean either deserve to be bought out by the mouse house.

Well, Stan and Kirby certainly deserve their credit, but the success of the Marvel films appears to lie directly at the feet of Kevin Ferguie or however you spell his name.

Beyond that, what everyone else has said is correct. Markets thrive on competition, and the best that could be said of a Disney-DC deal is that a lot of DC talent would end up working at Image, if Image would even have them. It might bring the indie publishers up in market share, but not nearly enough to challenge a Marvel Comics that also has access to Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman.

Though, if Disney ever did start making DC movies, Im sure the films would be much less polarizing.
