An appreciation thread for the african and african american characters of the DCU
John Stewart, BY FAR. I believe he is the only viable option DC has if they want to aggressively compete against Marvel's black male superheroes. Unfortunately, DC doesn't seem interested in aggressively pushing John Stewart, largely due to them wanting to invest more in Hal Jordan. And here we are now.
But yeah, John. I think he's got a great look, awesome power set, he's a fascinating character when written well, he's perfect for wish fulfillment, and I think he was one of the best written characters of the entire DC Animated Universe, which is saying a heck of a lot. For black male heroes, I see him as the total package. There's really no weak link with him, unless you want to say he's a black version of a white character, which I'm sure some will. But the difference for me is he's one of the few black versions of a white character that I personally think surpasses the white character.
I thought Batwing, David Zavimbe, was pretty awesome.
Pull List:
Marvel Comics: Venom, X-Men, Black Panther, Captain America, Eternals, Warhammer 40000.
DC Comics: The Last God
Image: Decorum
As a fan of the GL corps I admittingly have a bias towards John Stewert. But Steel & Vixen are pretty awesome as well IMO.
There's a Time For Peace, and Then There's a Time To Punch Nazi Scumbags in the Face!!
I really liked Batwing I but Vixen will always be my favourite. I'm still bitter that both are not around at the moment and I really can't bring myself to watch Arrow just for Vixen.
Still hoping that Bumblebee and Herald find a home in the new Titans book even if they are not on the cover.
My current favorites are John Stewart, Cyborg and Mr. Terrific. John takes the top stop and gets my vote.
From the list I pick Cyborg I feel like he can tackle an area of the DCU where he could be at the forefront in terms of being the most recognizable machine related hero of the DCU.
My favorite here is Kaldur though
David Zavimbe. I absolutely love him and was livid when they replaced him with some American rich kid, really hope he comes back one day somewhere. Second is Kaldur.
Current Pull: Lazarus, The Realm, Seven to Eternity, Aquaman, Flash, Justice League Dark, Justice League Odyssey, Sideways, Black Panther, Captain America, Daredevil, Death of the Inhumans.
Future Pull: Killmonger.
There's a lot of fun Black DC characters I love but I'm not sure I can really choose one as a favorite.
Kaldur in Young Justice was amazing.
Loved David Zavimbe/Batwing (they still haven't brought him back?). I loved the Kingdom from his series as well and wanted to see more of Dawnfire and Deity in particular.
Natasha Irons was fun.
And though he's barely a character I loved the idea behind Regal in JSA All-Stars aka Martin Jefferson who in an AU was an average person who just happened to be struck by Tachyons and turned into the most powerful man in that universe, drastically altering that universe's landscape.
I'm hoping Darla Dudley, one of the Shazam kids, gets some story time too as her name implies her father is presumably Uncle Marvel aka Dudley H. Dudley.
I picked John Stewart, as he is my favorite DC hero.
I do wish he played a more prominent roles in the books.
I would also like to see Mal, Karen, Mr. Terrific, Aqualad, Bronze Tiger & Vixen.
With Mal & Karen plus Bronze Tiger & Vixen, it would be great to see more romance in the books.

I love Cyborg and and Vixen a lot but if they are put against Kaldur'ahm (who is my obsession) they will lose every time.

Kaldur'ahm was my favorite character on Young Justice. I was hoping that version of the character would have shown up in the comics by now.
