Finally saw it, probably my favorite X movie now. Bleak but really really really good.

I think it has a chance to reach $600 million worldwide. Japan's release is delayed until June 1st I think, but It has a good shot at ending next week between $190 to $200 domestic and $350 million international. Add whatever is left domestically to that, and with Wolverine's popularity in Japan, I think it will get to at least a 6.1 multiplier.

You are correct - noted earlier.

...and this picture is well on its way to a nice financial run.
Comic book films at the Japanese Box Office have done well for themselves (other than Apocalypse - which was very telling).

    - Doctor Strange: $16,228,286
    - Suicide Squad: $15,607,713
    - X-Men: Apocalypse: $7,360,778
    - Captain America: Civil War: $24,366,759
    - Batman v Superman: $16,531,874
    - Deadpool: $18,916,494
    - Ant-Man: $9,670,913
    - X-Men: Days of Future Past: $9,983,199
    - Man of Steel: $8,993,829

So Japan should as a minimum based on trends break $14MM-$15MM.

First Class made a similar amount. Not too surprising.

Actually, in that case it would matter as First Class was a relaunch of an existing franchise. So initially, audiences would be hesitant. Apocalypse being the third movie with the First Class team - along with some new members - would be a more established franchise. So you would assume more audience trust, and a slightly larger payday.

It does feel good to have a comic book movie released where the majority of critics and movie-goers agree it is a solid production.

    Amen!

James McAvoy Reveals His Thoughts About Logan

James McAvoy, who plays the younger version of Professor Charles Xavier, was in Austin promoting his appearance in the new film Atomic Blonde at its SXSW premiere, when he was asked his thoughts on the new Wolverine film.

“I know I’ve got another 40 years of making these movies,” he joked.

“It was cool. It was really awesome. And I thought it was beautifully done,” McAvoy elaborated. “And just really great to see these stories that we’re seeing told a lot, actually, just taken somewhere incredibly different.”

This wasn't just a great superhero movie, but just great movie in general!

One thing that stuck out for me spoilers:
Remember how the trailer reveals X-Men comics exist in the universe of this movie? And how some reaction to that was just weird? Well, watching Logan, something struck me about the use of those comics beyond just the whole "It contains the coordinates for Eden" angle.

Logan has been compared to a Western; Xavier and Laura/X-23 are watching Shane and she even quotes the film during her eulogy to Logan. Well, during the late 19th to early 20th century, there were "Dime Store Novels," which were considered cheap, sensationalist stories. The most popular ones were Westerns, featuring fictionalized accounts of real-life figures such as Jesse James, Buffalo Bill, Kit Carson, Wild Bill Hickok, Wyatt Earp, Billy the Kid, etc. Which, of course, enhanced their already legendary status. Thing is, the dime store novels are considered the literary ancestor of...you guessed it, comic books.

Thus in the world of Logan, comics are the dime store novels. Which not only further underscores the Western parallel, but that mutants, while real, are now all but extinct and considered figures of legend...just like the gunfighters of the Old West.

Want more? Gunslingers were considered outlaws, and were "hated and feared" while alive. Now we consider them almost heroic. In the world of Logan, mutants were hated and feared, too. But there are moments in the film where Logan encounters folks who, when they learn he's a mutant, don't react with fear, but rather with awe and respect, like the doctor who Laura brings to Logan. Which makes Xavier dream of humans no longer fearing mutants ironically and tragically fulfilled.
    end of spoilers

Looks like the International Box Office estimates were off by $1.1MM, while the Domestic Box Office was higher.

Still...4.5X production budget within two weeks. Incredible!

Days of Future Past was marketed as more of a sequel to the original franchise though and kinda was.

It heavily focused on First Class's Professor Xavier, Magneto, Mystique and Beast. Wolverine was used as a bridge between the two versions of the X-Men. Even the introduction of Quicksilver had nothing to do with the original run. To say this was heavily focused on the old cast when the bulk of the film was the actors from First Class is ignoring reality.

    No offense meant.

Never said that the film itself heavily focused on the old cast, but that it was marketed that way and it wasn't really a prequel.

I guess that is a perception you could assume from some of the marketing material, and a few of the trailers. Though Fox gave as much space to the First Class team in each.

But then... (because this forum only allows one video at a time)
