I read this wild theory a while back somewhere about how sometime in the future, Batman saves the world battling Darkseid but gets sent back in time. He ends up in Crime Alley and sees his parents approaching, and realizes that HE was the mugger who killed his parents, and he needs to do so again in order to ensure that that there will be a Batman to save the world. The shock and trauma from orphaning himself leads to him losing his mind and he tries to drown himself in a river polluted by chemical wastes...only to emerge as the Joker.
