    Default When Clark Met Barbara

    "Wild Weekend in Washington":

As Batman and Superman are wrapping up a case (an unpublished encounter with Effron the Sorcerer), Bruce suggests that when Clark goes on assignment to Washington, D.C., the reporter should drop in on Congresswoman Barbara Gordon. The Caped Crusader seems to think that C.K. and B.G. are a good match and he might be playing Cupid.

However, when Babs meets Clark she's not too impressed, thinking he's a bit boring. At a Washington soirιe, Kent happens to let out some top secret information that the Batman shared with Superman.

Later, Clark is abducted by unfriendly agents trying to pump him for information. Gordon changes to Batgirl to rescue Kent, although he doesn't really need saving.

Together, the Dominoed Daredoll and the Action Ace mop up the kidnappers and capture the mastermind, Mr. J. (not that Mr. J.). Babs does not suspect that Clark is the Man of Steel.

The reason why Clark blurted out state secrets has to do with him being under the power of the Golden Eye--a magic device of Effron the Sorcerer--see post #1052.

    Default When Clark Was Batman

    "Menace of the Energy Blasters":

Bruce asks Clark to fill in for him as Batman at a charity concert, while the Masked Manhunter cracks down on a mob in the harbour. Later, Superman leaves the concert to help out his World's Finest Friend. Meanwhile, Congresswoman Gordon is in Gotham attending the concert and goes backstage to congratulate the Batman on his performance, but only finds some of Clark Kent's clothes and his press pass.

The next day, Babs goes to Metropolis, to investigate if Clark could really be the Batman.

While there, an emergency at the Twin Towers brings both Superman and Batgirl to the scene (in circumstances eerily similar to 9/11).

Clark Kent, on his news broadcast, shows how he substituted for Batman at the charity concert.

Note: Kent says he's doing a feature on super-heroes--that's why he tried playing Batman for a day--ΰ la George Plimpton who famously tried out different careers in his reporting. Since these Twin Towers are in Metropolis they can't be the same as those in New York.

    Default When Barbara Met Linda

    "Cleopatra Queen of America":

Even though Supergirl and Batgirl have teamed up before, this seems to be the first time that Linda Lee Danvers and Barbara Gordon have met. Member of Congress Gordon visits the New Athens campus and, being the lowest in the staff pecking order, Danvers is tasked with showing the woman around.

After obtaining a "was sceptre"--an Egyptian staff that once belonged to Cleopatra--Lilibet Winsor has the magical power to make others do her bidding. Only Linda Danvers and Barbara Gordon seem to be immune to the spell. When Batgirl and Supergirl try to stop the U.S. federal government from turning over all power to "Cleopatra," the Justice League of America protect their queen.

Lilibet Winsor's sidekick Danny could be Danny Victor--given this is a Maggin story, that would be the likely intent. The was sceptre is quite literal--as with most magic devices--and follows the words of Lilibet exactingly.

Default When Supergirl Met Batgirl, Before

"The Supergirl-Batgirl Team" is spotlighted in a two page feature for SUPERMAN FAMILY 171.

    Those previous team-ups were in--

    ▪ WORLD'S FINEST COMICS 169 (September 1967)--1st story, "The Supergirl-Batgirl Plot" by Bates, Swan and Klein; cover art by Swan and Klein--

--most of this story was a prank and not really the team-up that the cover promised.

    ▪ WORLD'S FINEST COMICS 176 (June 1968)--1st story, "The Superman-Batman Split" by Bates, Adams and Giordano; cover art by Neal Adams (Infantino layout)--see posts #570 - 572.

    ▪ ADVENTURE COMICS 381 (June 1969)--"The Supergirl Gang" by Bates, Mortimer and Abel; cover art by Swan and Adams--see post #608.

Default When the Superman Family Met the Batman Family

Reprints in this issue have a Batman Family theme--

    ▪ SUPERMAN'S GIRL FRIEND, LOIS LANE 29 (November 1961)--3rd story, "The Irresistible Lois Lane" by Bernstein, Swan and Kaye; r. WORLD'S FINEST COMICS 141 (May 1964); r. THE SUPERMAN FAMILY 171 (June-July 1975); cover art by Swan and Kaye:

One day Lois decides to kiss all the boys. She smooches Green Arrow, Aquaman and Batman.

Of course, it's all to save Superman from some aliens. Note that all these heroes were under the aegis of Jack Schiff and Mort Weisinger at the time of original publication.

    ▪ SUPERMAN'S PAL, JIMMY OLSEN 111 (June 1968)--1st story, "Jimmy Olsen, Boy Wonder" by Bates and Costanza--see post #568.

I realized that Mort Weisinger got very lucky with the fact comics back in the 1950s and 1960s were once they were sold, you'll never find them again. Imagine being a new reader seeing this cover. You'll be shocked to see Lois Lane kissing some Robin Hood-looking guy. We'll never have these type of covers again.

Just before the post-Crisis reboot (almost in the same month), there was a two issue LOIS LANE mini-series which had Lucy in it, but this time she had brown hair--maybe she finally decided to dye her white hair so she wouldn't look so old.
Perhaps she had brown hair to match the actress in the recently released Supergirl movie?

    Default by your command

I made it back to the Battlestar Galactica unscathed after a Cylon attack. And, in spite of a fire in the landing bay, my Viper sustained minimal damage on re-entry. May the Blessings of the Lords of Kobol go with you.

To tell the truth, I don't have a memory of seeing SUPERGIRL (1984). I remember vaguely a few scenes with Faye Dunaway, Peter O'Toole, Marc McClure--but those might have just been random clips I happened to catch on T.V., since I can't remember the story at all. And I don't remember the Lucy Lane from that movie--although, according to the cast list, there was one.

I do remember the Lucy Lane on the SUPERGIRL T.V. show, who had dark hair. Checking that cast listing, she was played by Jenna Dewan--who I see returned to the part in SUPERMAN AND LOIS--another show I've yet to watch--what a surprise that she got to return to the role after all those years.

    Default Clark Kent's Birthday

Happy Birthday, Clark! June 18th is Clark Kent's birthday. Put an extra candle on that cake--

THE NEW ADVENTURES OF SUPERBOY 1 (January 1980)--"The Most Important Year of Superboy's Life" by Bates, Schaffenberger and Dave Hunt--see post #371:

June 18th is established as our boy's birthday in--

SUPERMAN 263 (April 1973)--2nd story, "Unhappy Birthday to You" by Bates, Dillin and McLaughlin--see post #998:

"One afternoon, on the 18th of June--" Clark's work pals throw a surprise birthday party.

This is also given as his birthday on the SUPER DC CALENDAR 1976. It's the anniversary of the day Kal-El's rocket landed on Earth.

June 18th also happens to be Paul McCartney's birthday. Happy Birthday, Paul! Happy Birthday to you!

Did Cary Bates give Clark this birthday in homage to the Beatle? I wonder.
