Default Innovations That Did NOT Make Things Better.

Saw someone in our hotel parking lot this morning with one of those "donut" spare tires on their car. This has to be one of the most useless things ever. "Hey, got a flat? Well, with our invention, you get to change your tire TWICE!"

And halogen headlights. Guys, we kept them limited to a certain brightness and aimed them at the ground for a REASON. Congratulations, you get an almost infinitesimal increase in visibility while half-blinding anyone coming at you.

Anyone else got a peeve against "improvements"?

I would say Social Media. Creating a generation of teens that don't know how to properly interact with real human beings, because they are too busy on their cellphones telling the world where they are, what they are having for lunch, and taking selfies. Speaking of which selfies are also a pox, spamming the internet with pictures of yourself that have no purpose other then to prove your own vanity. Also dammed be the man/woman who created the selfie stick!

I like the internet and some social media. There's lots of folks out there use it as a means to hurt other people, but it's a useful tool for legit communication.

My choice is going to be auto-tune. Just cuz of the way it's been abused in pop music over last say ten years.

    Low-calorie and low-fat diets.

The only one that works long-term for most people is the low-carb diet.

The trend toward mass, long-term incarceration that began in the 1990s.

The globalization of the economy that began in the 1990s.

The complete loss of privacy that the Internet has created.

    Political correctness.

    "Broken window" policing.

The Supreme Court's classifying political contributions as "free speech."

The war on drugs. And really, anything the government does that has "war" in its name.

I couldn't disagree more. The advances in communication have managed to improve so much in the world.

    Surprised this hasn't appeared:

nuclear weapons-did the world really need a faster way to destroy itself?

I would not say that the internet and social media are necessarily bad things, based on the way some people use them. They have served to bring a lot of people together in ways not previously possible and with positive results. It has helped many people find someone that they fell in love with, in real life; not just in cyberspace. It has shared knowledge from a variety of sources. Not all of the younger generation live on it and can't interact in the real world. I do think it is filled with pointless junk; but, so are many people's lives and communities and it merely reflects that. I think people interacted less in their communities well before social media, due to the demands of work and other factors, and the loss of "neighborhoods," with the accompanying meeting places, like local businesses and clubs. More and more, people had to travel away from the area that they lived to take part in those functions. By contrast, people from around the globe can talk to one another, which has done more to add a sense of community on a global scale.

I just upgraded my computer to Windows 10 and now I can't figure out how to do half the things I could do before because I can't find the dang buttons.

Its quite possible that the reason we never went to war with Russia during the Cold War was the threat of dual nuclear annihilation. Both sides knew that if the missles started flying we are all dead. Go back to conventional non nuclear warfare and one side might just have thought it worth trying.

Exactly along with easily finding out information. So I completey disagree with Shawn Hopkins about the internet being a bad idea overall.

It certainly was bad for book stores since people aren't willing to pay for their quality entertainment, no it has to be cheap or for free
