Who can beat Dr. Manhattan?

Wasn't Superman Prime supposed to be a Morrison's backdoor way to get Kal-L into the the post-COIE universe (before IC). I thought I read somewhere years ago the he was supposed to Kal-L.

I don't recall this? As far as I could gather in the original DC One Million series, he was supposed to be Kal-El from the Post-Crisis Universe. But then, I would say that after the release of All-Star Superman, it actually makes a lot more sense if he's All-Star Superman - seeing as he is transformed into pure energy inside the sun, and then repairs it. It makes a lot of sense as the origin of Superman Prime.

Still, that would be really cool if he was Kal-L! That the first Superhero is also the ULTIMATE Superhero!

Not entirely sure if Superman Prime's character would be the way it is if he was Kal-L though... I always figured, he'd be a different type of Superman Prime... I mean, he IS a bit more set in his beliefs and a bit less diplomatic, really.

He was my first thought. Perhaps the Guardians(Oa) if they're still around and maybe Parallax. Would love to see the LSH take him on (hell, would love to see them take anyone on. I just want them back).

I was thinking along these lines, too. If Dr. Manhattan is trying to stamp out hope, Dream seems like a likely adversary; Dream proved the power of hope when he was challenged in hell during Sandman's first arc (having been reminded of this power, we now know from the recent prequel, by a young girl named Hope.) I can see him playing a behind-the-scenes role in reviving old stories of heroic legacies and stoking hopeful dreams among DC heroes.

To OP's question: its totally upto the writer. Ambush Bug, Detective Chimp or even Martha Kent, it can be anybody.
It should be Capt Atom IMO though.

Edit: On second thought, it should be Martha. Her name alone can stop Supes and Bats dead in their tracks. A supremely powerful entity like that is worthy of beating Manhattan.

Even in the Watchmen universe it's all but said Dr. Manhattan could almost be destroyed by Ozymandias and his tech (you just only get one real chance to try as Adrian learned)

In the DCU? Dr. M could be beaten by almost anyone.

Dr Manhatten isn't evil. Yet. He is slowly drifting from humanity and I don't think anything can really stop it. It was halted at the end of Watchmen but in time the slip will commence again. The reason Ozy could in some way 'beat' him was through sheer reason and logic. Nothing more. He is disarmed by the truth. And Ozy is only 'The Most Intelligent Human'. Which really doesn't say much in the DCU, any of the Brainiacs could whup him and probably come up with something to defeat Manhatten. He is after all the creation of 20th century atomic techology, some of the sci fi stuff in the DCU, is far beyond that. Legion would probably be the best place to start, with their future tech. Manhatten may be nothing to them.
