has howard been in comics where his presence is treated "seriously"? Not comic relief?

The modern Chip Zdarsky run is literally perfect for Netflix as a surreal drama/comedy. The biggest issue is the portrayal of Howard, be it a suit or CGI.

I agree on both counts. I guess animated is the way to go, in the end. I would love a Howard series in the vein of Bojack Horseman. An adult, dark comedy version of Howard is something that could work so well.

To me, it seems difficult to translate HTD to a medium other than comics. At his best, what made him work well was the idea that he was a character from the “funny animal” comic genre placed into the “superhero” genre setting...and then using that scenario as a springboard to comment upon the conventions of comics as well as society in general...

I don’t know how you replicate that dynamic in another medium...

Also, given the current political and cultural climate, doing HTD in any medium and doing it right would end up being too controversial...Disney isn’t up for that...

I think animated Howard is best.
