    Hey H.H. = )

    1. I might just do that - it does seem to be going home well to others on the boards as well - and since it's supposed to be a response to MoS which I didn't like, then I can see myself enjoying that. Glad to hear there's still depth to Millar.

    2. I believe I read some story about it on Bleedingcool years ago - and then yesterday I saw the documentary "Grant Morrison - talking with gods." In it, at around the 59 minute mark, he mentions: "People were revealing themselves to be bastards. And my best friend was splitting off from me and insulting me in the Scottish Press, and saying horrible things about me". I put two and two together from there, and dug up some of the old articles.

You know, with all of this in mind, I think I really want to see Millar on Superman now! Mainly because I can tell that I'm slipping into that whole my-comic-creator-is-better-than-yours -secterism here! I need to challenge myself away from that - it's childish.

I'm sure Millar could do an awesome job - I do think he should be given his own continuity to do it though - because then I think we'd really see what he would do- what kind of Superman he's been thinking of for all these years.

Morrison himself doesn't actually think of the New 52 Superman as "his" Superman (I'll find the interview later). I'd imagine Millar just wasn't vibin with it same and Morrison.

You know... I think there might actually be something to what you're saying... I can actually sort of see that. Even though New-52 brought a platform for Morrison to talk about social issues and outreach and capitalism and socialism and how they both relate to Superman - I can still see him not being a 100% on board this.

Mainly because his All-Star Superman is so incredibly different - that's Silver Age Earth-1 Superman. But New-52... he's Earth-2 Golden Age Superman, which was a very, very different character from Earth-1 Supes.

The destiny of Earth-2 Superman isn't necessarily to become what Morrison envisions: a God in the sun. Earth-2 would end up as a different type of god... something else. Maybe a bit more like the ending of Joe Keatinge's "Strange Visitor" -story in Adventures of Superman.

    Yeah... I could see that.

I always liked the ending implied in Elliot Maggin's work. There was a story, The Day the Cheering Stopped, where in the course of a bunch of convoluted events, Superman found a sword with his shield on the hilt. When he picked it up, his consciousness was described as spreading out across the cosmos, and to stop it he threw the thing into deep space.

Maggin also portrayed Superman as eventually leaving Earth after Lois Lane died of old age, and traveling the universe with an elderly Luthor, until eventually the former foe died. I always inferred that Superman would have eventually gotten the hilt of the sword back and allowed it to take its course, integrating his consciousness throughout the universe. In other words, Superman becomes God- not a Sun God, not a powerful embodied figure, but the sacramental universal God that Christians call the Holy Spirit. I don't think that Superman would put it like that, but damn if I don't like the idea. It's more subtle than the Golden Prime Superman or the Strange Visitor arc where Superman eventually splits into nigh-infinite Supermen until just before the end of the universe...

But I don't necessarily think any of those endings are suitable for a Superman like classic Earth-2 used to have, or the post-Flashpoint Kal. I don't know how I'd want their story to end. Not with death when the sun expands, certainly.

    Ditto

I remember reading about his pitch for a Superman film trilogy a few years ago ... that would make an interesting (not to mention epic) comic even tho it would probably take a long time to finish

It might also be interesting to see his take on a 'Superman Year One' mini series similar to that 'Huck' thing he was working, I sense it would also be similar to Grant Morrison's N52 origin (which would be a good thing IMO)

Anyway, I guess only time will tell ...

Default He confirmed it y'all!!!! It's SUPERMAN!

So I woke up on Friday with an amazing idea for a big DC project. Not surprisingly, it's a Superman epic and it all kind of just clicked with me, an idea I'd had in my head for the last five years and which finally came together somewhere between closing my eyes on Thursday night and eating my Porridge on Friday morning.

At the same time, I've been talking to my old pals at Marvel about doing something for the last eighteen months. Last month I came up with the perfect project. Like the Superman story, it's just six issues long, but would be a major work and something that scratches a fanboy itch. A thing to be ticked off my bucket-list before I get into all the sequels I've been plotting from Starlight to Superior to Huck and all the others.

The only downside is that I only have 12 weeks set aside at the end of the year to do ONE special project for one of the Big 2 as the artists are ready on all my Millarworld sequels immediately after. It'll actually be a lovely change of pace as I finish off phase one of my creator-owned books, the final script for the Capullo project wrapping up tomorrow and the big Romita Jr project written between now and October. This will be my one and only WFH project for the next couple of years and both have me ACHING to get into them, both just really exciting to me.

Both companies are also into it so one way or another these two stories will get done over the next couple of years with one most definitely written by this Christmas and drawn by an artist who will make your knees knock.

Seriously, you guys will love. My plan here is do the either the best Superman story ever or the most important Marvel comic of the last twenty years.

    More as it happens.

    MM

So people, if it's DC then it's 100% Superman! It's a 6 issue long epic with an amazing artist like only Mark Millar can pick. And if that's not enough to get you hype (seriously yo?) then how bout the fact that the Mark Millar that just finished up thinking of said Superman epic is the same guy soon to be doing sequels for Huck, Superior, and Starlight. Maybe stepping away from the character for a few years and mixing and matching the formula has yielded him new insight? The big big BIG question is what does Mark Millar have to say about Superman after doing Kickass, Wanted, Superior, Jupiter's Circle/Legacy, Starlight, MPH, and HUCK??? Post ALL THAT what does his Superman look like?

The idea he's had in his head is likely the "Godfather style" epic he originally wanted as a movie. He's likely gonna be doing this out of continuity similar to the "Landisverse" with American Alien.

    EVERYONE GET F$CKIN HYPE!!!!!

PS Pretty interesting that he instantly confirmed that he was doing Superman for DC but didn't specify what he'd do for Marvel. It's worth noting that he said (about a year or two ago) that he'd turn his Superman movie into a big graphic novel with DC when he found the time. How long has this thing been in the works between them? Him being so open about it might indicate it's closeness to being put out? Just something to think about.

Also worth noting that the replies to his announcement have been met with an almost unanimous "go with Superman, Mark". So there's something.

    A. He's gonna do the Marvel book. "The most important Marvel comic of the last twenty years" has a lot more prestige - and importantly sales potential - attached to it than a Superman project at this point. Not to mention he's confirmed he's doing Superior 2, which should scratch that Superman itch. And Marvel will want to fill the space of its yearly event cycle more than DC will want what would presumably be a standalone out-of-continuity story.

    B. He's also going to do the Superman project, because he straight up says he will. "...one way or another these two stories will get done over the next couple of years". In that regard, it also makes sense to do the Superman project later because in "the next couple of years" is Superman's 80th anniversary.

    C. So, big Marvel event comic by him for next year, Superman with almost certainly Bryan Hitch for 2018. Hype is the word for it.

A I wouldn't be too sure. You might be right but I wouldn't be 100 on it. "most important Marvel comic of the last twenty years" might just be Millar hype. I don't even think doing Superior scratches the itch quite right. Take a look at the thread for this on his site. He's VERY particular on how he wants Superman. But then again, I can't possibly imagine what Superior 2 will be like.

B I'm totally fine with waiting, but the sheer amount of hype and passion going on about Superman over on his thread from him is interesting. The guy's fit to burst with hype over his soon to be book.

C It's actually not Hitch (my first thought too). He confirmed it. But we do know off the artist though. I do wonder his pick.

Honestly whatever the case my hype can't be suppressed!

Just saw that thread; also a good point from Deniz that the Marvel event machine maybe isn't where it's at right now if Millar wants to make his mark. Reading it, I'm leaning now towards Superman with how much he's talking about him - the whole thread has turned into a Superman discussion. I'm still thinking a 2018 release date for the 80th anniversary. Maybe with Alex Ross? That guy's as cinematic as it gets, and attached to the one Superman project Millar thinks has gotten it right in the last 30 years. All that lead-in time for him might not hurt either.

Also just saw this in the thread, to Myskin asking if it would be based off his movie pitch:

"Matthew and I never really put a plan together. We heard Superman was becoming available and I told Matthew I had a three movie idea which was a new take on the origin, Darkseid, etc, and it was really good, but didn't put a plot together as I thought it very unlikely to happen and didn't waste time. Matthew called WB and they said they had other plans (which was Man of Steel), but nobody knows what I had in mind beyond what I've said in public. Most of it wouldn't work now as origin been redone and my take on Phantom Zone would be moot since we've recently seen all that too. Plus they're using Darkseid. I'd use elements of my idea though. Probably the very broad structure, but I'd use lot more Luthor in my comic version. As you'll have seen from Red Son I love Luthor. He's also chronically mis-portrayed."

So we can probably expect at least a little of Darkseid and the Phantom Zone.

Yeah I came across that and I can't wait!

Well it answers my question on if Millar's views on the character are still as draconian as they were a over decade ago lol. But it's all good because we haven't actually ever seen his unfiltered take on the character. The hype is so freakin real right now, man!

Also going to be lots of Brainiac and very little Daily Planet stuff outside of Lois, according to him.

Would hope for this sooner than later since I'm not buying anything right now, but sounds fun even if we have to wait.

Well my day has been made. Thanks for the update Superlad! I honestly hope and most likely know without a doubt Millar will go with the man of steel on this one. Make it happen Mark. DC and and us fans need it.
