Default DC WOMEN: A Universal Appreciation Thread!!!

Let me just start off by saying that I was over at the Marvel board (I am also a Marvel fan, gasp) and noticed they had a universal appreciation thread for their women so I figured why not borrow the idea and give it a DC spin! After all the DCU is crawling with incredible female characters (good and evil)!

The premise of this thread is to discuss the women of the DCU and whether or not you feel DC is doing a good job with their women. Its also a thread to showcase your love for your favorite DCU lady!! Unlike the Marvel thread I opted not to include a poll asking who the leading lady is as the answer is such a given... Wonder Woman duh (More on that at a later post)!! So I will start off by asking do you feel DC is doing a good job with their women? Their LGBT women? Their Women of color? Their female villains?...etc please explain below

    LADIES OF THE DCEU

    HEROES
Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman

    Viola Davis as Amanda Waller
Margot Robbie as Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn
    Cara Delevingne as June Moon/Enchantress

    SUPPORTING CHARACTERS
    Amy Adams as Lois Lane
    Diane Lane as Martha Kent
    Tao Okomoto as Mercy Graves

    Top DC Women
    (according to appearances)

    1)Wonder Woman
    2)Lois Lane
    3)Batgirl
    4)Black Canary
    5)Supergirl
    6)Catwoman
    7)Hawkgirl
    8)Donna Troy
    9)Starfire
    10)Powergirl
    11)Zatanna
    12)Raven
    13)Poison Ivy
    14)Wonder Girl
    15)Harley Quinn
    16)Huntress
    17)Hippolyta
    18)Carol Ferris
    19)Stargirl
    20)Mary Marvel
    21)Iris West
    22)Mera
    23)Big Barda
    24)Amanda Waller
    25)Katana

*Out of the top 30 females, 4 are from the Wonderverse (Diana, Donna, Cassie, Hippolyta), 3 are from the Superverse (Kara, Carol, and Lois) and 6 are from the Batverse (Barbra Gordon, Selina, Pamela, Harleen, Helena, and Talia)

*If you remove love interests (Lois, Iris, Carol) then the next 3 most used characters are Renee Montoya, Jade and Fire.

*Rounding out the top 30 are Vixen and Talia Al Ghul.

*Catwoman is DC's most used female villain, although she's more of an anti hero these days I guess.

*The Cheetah is one of DC's most used female villains, outside the Gotham Sirens, and is Wonder Woman's most used foe. Though she just missed the top 30 and placed at 33.

*Donna Troy has the most appearances out of all the Teen Titans women. Surprisingly Wonder Girl (Cassie) also fares very well as she is closing in on Raven. Guess DC really love their "Wonder Women" contrary to what some fans claim.

*Poison Ivy is DC's most used LGBT female and possibly LGBT character in general.

*Amanda Waller is the most used woman of color although that may change in the near future as both Katana (25) and Renee Montoya(26) are only a handful of appearances away from surpassing her. Interestingly Fire (28) and Vixen (29) both have 100 appearances less than the former 3. That should surprise some.

*Wonder Woman is the undisputed queen of the DCU. She has 1000+ more appearances than Lois Lane (2nd place)and more than double the appearances of Batgirl (3rd place).

PS: I have the numbers if anyone is curious ill post them in a bit.

I love the ladies of DC .

Well, as to the question of "is DC doing a good job with their women?," I'd be remiss not to mention DC Super Hero Girls, which is basically a wonderful showcase of all the leading ladies of DC (with a few exceptions) in a fun, inspiring, context for young girls .

They also have Supergirl leading the charge for female Superheroes on TV, Vixen as an African woman leading her own animated web-series, and Batwoman, one of their most prominent LGBT heroes, was a major part of the last Batman animated movie Bad Blood.

DC has an amazing lineup of female superheroes. Wonder Woman is the greatest of all time and no one at Marvel or DC will ever come close. Besides Diana my other favorites have to be Harley, Babs, Black Canary, Barda, Zatanna, Vixen, Crazy Jane, Starling, and Batwoman.

I hope Jessica Cruz really takes off as I would love to see more prominant Hispanic female superheros.

DC needs to bring back Starling, Grace Choi, and Manhunter!

Btw, where did you find those images? They're pretty great.

Batwoman was literally the only reason I was interested in seeing Bad Blood, and she was pretty much spot-on in it. It was one hell of an animated debut.
Mega fan of: Helena Bertinelli (pre-52), Batwoman, Birds of Prey, Guardians of the Galaxy, Secret Six
Fan of: Batman, Cassandra Cain, Wonder Woman, Silk, Stephanie Brown, Captain America, Hellcat, Renee Montoya, Gotham Central, King Shark
Quasi-Fan of: Aquaman, Midnighter, Superman, Catwoman, Nightwing, Green Arrow, Squadron Supreme, Red Hood

Other likes: Low, Hush, Arkham Asylum: ASHoSE, Watchmen, A-Force, Bombshells, Grayson, Unfollow

Team Cap (both Rogers and Danvers)

Agreed (though I also enjoyed the non-Batwoman parts as well) .

I recently had a lot of time on my hands so I decided to put together a few collages featuring the DC women. I used an app on my phone. Basically each collage has a theme: You have the JL women, The Young heroines (Teen Titans),DC's prominent women of color (hopefully that wasn't racist of me lol), the outliers (didn't know where to put them) and the female villains. I had a lot of fun haha.

On a side note Jessica Cruz seems to be doing well for herself, she's definitely racking up the appearances. Renee is DC's most used Latina if you're wondering.

Lol You could have called that category DC's international female heroes if you are worried. Except Jessica is from the US so maybe substitute Ice in her spot.

    Top 10 DC women-
    1. Catwoman 2. Harley Quinn 3. Power Girl 4. Barbara Gordon 5. Wonder Woman 6. Starfire 7. Raven 8. Zatanna 9. Batwoman 10. Renee Montoya
I like way more than that and had to make some painful cuts for my top 10.

In my opinion DC does slightly better than Marvel with women since most of the best female Marvel characters are in the X-Men and a few good female avengers like Black Widow She Hulk and Scarlet Witch. But DC has their best superheroines more spread out in the Bat-Books, Justice League books, Titans and Teen Titans etc. And they have better female villains like Poison Ivy, Amanda Waller, Killer Frost and Cheetah.

Also those are some great images in those collages. Many of them are by fan artists I know of which is impressive. I wonder if comics publishers have any interest in hiring extremely talented fan artists, because they totally should.

The list that I posted above is of women that DC uses the most. In other words, those rankings are determined by comicbook appearances, which Wonder Woman dominates. I'll post the numbers soon.

    Wonder Woman~ 5,532------------------ Huntress~790
    Lois Lane~ 4, 303.----------------------------Hippolyta~760
    Batgirl~ 2,362.--------------------------------- Carol Ferris~739
    Black Canary~ 2,253------------------------Stargirl~642
    Supergirl~ 2,221-------------------------------Mary Marvel~ 641
    Catwoman~ 1,888----------------------------Iris West~ 596
    Hawkgirl~ 1,361-------------------------------Mera~ 591
    Donna Troy~ 1,344------------------------- Big Barda~582
    Starfire~ 1,337-------------------------------- Amanda Waller~557
    Powergirl~ 1,334-----------------------------Katana~ 543
    Zatanna~ 1,026-------------------------------Renee Montoya~533
    Raven~ 974-------------------------------------Jade~ 504
    Poison Ivy~ 959-------------------------------Fire~ 496
    Wonder Girl~ 940-----------------------------Vixen~ 492
    Harley Quinn~ 911---------------------------Talia Al Ghul~469

    Saturn Girl~ 1,030-----------------------------Shadow Lass~457
    Phantom Girl~ 623----------------------------Dream Girl~ 366
    Lightning Lass~ 573--------------------------Dawnstar~ 308
    Shrinking Violet~ 565------------------------Sensor Girl~ 304
    Duplicate Girl~ 545---------------------------White Witch~175

I separated the Legion women from the rest of the DCU women because all their appearances come from an ensemble cast whose very concept doesn't allow for proper integration into the DCU. Those are the 5 most used Legion women.

All these numbers are from comic vine and are accurate as of 6/30. Positions will change as certain characters get used more.
