Default I am going to read JLA (Morrison 1997 all the way to Flashpoint)

This is next on my reading list as I am almost done Morrison's Batman run. My question is, are these crossovers and tie ins that I will need to get from other series for the full read?

I don't want to be reading an arc only to find out Part "x" takes place in another series. I basically want to have everything together in my hand so I don't have to go searching later on.

I do know there are some JLA/JSA crossovers as well.

I wouldn't advice to read everything up to Flashpoint since the JLA had huge ups and downs in that period.

I would suggest to you to read these, which are completely autonomous stories and great:

    Morrison's run
    Waid's run
    Kelly's run.

JLA Classified, first arc by Morrison.
    JLA/JSA: Vice and Virtue
JLA: 100 page spectaular- Heaven's Ladder
The Tornado's Path by Brad Meltzer.

Those are really the only very good JLA stories, that I remember. Trust me don't read everything, there is way to much bad stuff in there. For example the 2007 JLA is mostly bad except the first two arcs.

Morrison, Waid, and Kelly did a great job infusing the status quo of other books into their stories (Electric Superman worked better in Morrison's JLA than he did in his own series, in my opinion), but I don't believe any of their stories ever finished anywhere else. You'd get a reference occasionally about a JLA story in another title, but the stories themselves are pretty self contained.

Past that, you start getting into the Identity Crisis period, where the book started to finish other stories here and there, or serve as an epilogue, etc. As the poster above me said, stick to Morrison / Waid / Kelly, and skip the rest. Check out The Tornado's Path if you want, it's pretty good (so is The Lightning Saga), but they are kind of dependent upon having read Infinite Crisis, if I remember correctly.

Every post I make, it should be assumed by the reader that the following statement is attached: "It's all subjective. What works for me doesn't necessarily work for you, and vice versa, and that's ok. You may have a different opinion on it, but this is mine. That's the wonderful thing about being a comics fan, it's all subjective."

JLA Pain of the Gods is quite decent.

    I recommend it.

There's a pretty good storyline called Syndicate Rules written by Kurt Busiek that leads into an excellent weekly series called Trinity. It touches on a lot of aspects of the DCU so I'd definitely recommend it, even if it's not entirely focused on the JLA.

Kelley's run was hands down my favorite run on JLA.

Read the 1st issue and enjoyed it. I think they used some of this stuff for the first arc of the JL Animated Series back in 2001.

Agreed. I'd have loved/was hoping to see an Ancient League spinoff.

After issue 4, Superman is all blue and has electricity emitting off of him in issue 5. When did this happen (and what issue), also, when did Metamorpho die?

Also during this time JLA came out with dozens of stand alone graphic novels that IMO were mostly pretty great.

    JLA: The Working Week
    JLA: A League of One
    JLA: Heavens Ladder
JLA/Avengers ( was canin pre-52 and is a prequel to Syndicate Rules and Trinity)
    JLA: Earth Two
    JLA: A Midsummer's Nightmare
