Stan Lee
Steve Gerber
Rumiko Takahashi
Stan Lee
Neil Gaiman
Grant Morrison
Avatar: Here's to the late, great Steve Dillon. Best. Punisher. Artist. EVER!
Best writers?
I think these three.
- Alan Moore (although I dont really like him all that much most of the time)
- Ed Brubaker
- Neil Gaiman
Favourite three writers on the other hand:
- Ed Brubaker
- Warren Ellis
- Garth Ennis
Stan Lee
Alan Moore
And I am going to go for one that though these days there is a lot to criticize, his influence on the comic book world is hard to question
Frank Miller
Stan Lee (for his influence in creating the modern superhero comic)
Harvey Pekar (for his influence in the opposite direction, expanding what comics could be)
Peter Milligan (he works in the same milieu as Morrison and Moore and he's a better writer than either)
Will Eisner
Harvey Kurtzman
Alan Moore
Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore... and I don't know, for influence Chris Claremont? None of them are my favourite, but this isn't about my three favourites, but "the top".
"We are Shakespeare. We are Michelangelo. We are Tchaikovsky. We are Turing. We are Mercury. We are Wilde. We are Lincoln, Lorca, Leonardo da Vinci. We are Alexander the Great. We are Fredrick the Great. We are Rustin. We are Addams. We are Marsha! Marsha Marsha Marsha! We so generous, we DeGeneres. We are Ziggy Stardust hooked to the silver screen. Controversially we are Malcolm X. We are Plato. We are Aristotle. We are RuPaul, god dammit! And yes, we are Woolf."
My criteria for top writer would be the people responsible for a high number of the best comics.
So far, I think it's...
3. Frank Miller (Batman: Year One, The Dark Knight Returns, Daredevil: Born Again, Daredevil: Elektra Saga, Sin City, 300, Daredevil: The Man Without Fear)
2. Stan Lee (Lee/ Ditko Spider-Man, Lee/ Romita Spider-Man, Lee/ Kirby Fantastic Four, Lee/ Wood Daredevil, Lee/ Buscema Silver Surfer)
1. Alan Moore (Watchmen, The best Superman stories, Batman: The Killing Joke, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Miracleman/ Marvelman, Top Ten, From Hell, Swamp Thing)
I could see an argument for Gaiman, Kurtzman (Mad Magazine, EC War, The Jungle Book), Feldstein (EC Horror, EC Sci Fi, New Direction) Morrison (All-Star Superman, New X-Men, Batman/ Batman and Robin/ Batman Inc./ Arkham Asylum, Doom Patrol, JLA, The Invisibles, Animal Man), Tezuka (Adolf, Astro Boy, Phoenix, Blackjack), and Otto Binder (Captain Marvel, Silver Age Superman) although I need to read and reread more of their stories.
Sincerely,
Thomas Mets
Someone (me) should mention Will Eisner. The Spirit alone gives him a place in the Pantheon.
but the Graphic Novels he wrote starting with A Contract with God are a zenith of the medium.
1. Will Eisner
2. Alejandro Jodorowsky
3. Jeff Smith
Moore, Gaiman, Hugo Pratt and a few others all got consideration for spots 2 & 3. The first spot is set in stone for me.
