You have to take this into the context of the era. Marvel was beginning to go a different direction with Doom and they began with a try out solo story in MSH #20 which much like Doom's origin in FF annual #2 shows the character in a more sympathetic light adding the romance angle from his past with Valeria (nuts to you Mark Waid for fridging her) Then they launched the Astonishing Tales solo which ended with Gerry Conway's little gem called "Though Some Call it Magic" that introduces the annual duel to win the redemption of his mother's soul. To this day, Conway calls Doom in is forward to the Sub-Mariner's MW volume that contains a team up with Doom and Namor against MODOK. Heroes were reluctantly allying themselves with Doom many times after this, like Captain America in SVTU and so forth.

Thanks *I think*. Pettiness I can understand, but fear? Are we talking about the same Doom here? The same Doom that frequently takes on teams of heroes single-handed? Who took down the Beyonder? Who held off 3 or 4 Mad Celestials so Val and Nathaniel's plan had time to work (see Hickman's FF)?
Writers have a wildly different takes on Doom. Waid is definitely on one end of the spectrum and really isn't in line with Lee & Kirby. After all, Reed himself says that Doom doesn't lie ...
