Thought I'd start this thread since X-men 92 needs all the love it can get. There's no way Marvel is going to let a series like this last too long. The X-men are actually thriving in this world. They haven't been sterilized, marginalized, or denigrated to obscene levels yet. The writers, Chad Bowers and Chris Sims, have shown amazing passion for this series and I hope it helps sustain it. But it can always use our help and this is definitely one issue that has a lot to love. If you're not satisfied with how Cyclops and Jean Grey are being portrayed in the mainline comics for now, this one is for you. Now, onto the spoilers.
spoilers:end of spoilers
-We begin in a quiet cabin where Cyclops and Jean share a nice moment. Jean believes she's not done being a hero and Cyclops supports her, even though he doesn't want to return to the X-men just yet
-They go to sleep and wake up in the year 3992 (a full 2,000 years, no less), courtesy of Rachel Summers, who now embodies what little remains of the Phoenix Force
-They find out that Apocalypse laid waste to the world, killing half the population and leaving Sinister in charge while he takes his madness to the stars
-Cyclops is reluctant to help at first, not fully trusting them, but Jean vouches for them and that's good enough for him
-They team up with Blaquesmith, who acts as their version of Forge during the journey
-They set off into the Savage Land to find Sinister's citadel, fighting Deadpool robots and a T-rex armed with Cyclops powers
-They arrive at Sinister's citadel and face an army of rejected Cyclops/Jean clones
-They confront Sinister, only to find out that he had teamed up with Rachel from the beginning so he could get their genetic information
-Sinister reveals he wants to destroy Apocalypse now, having grown tied of being his slave, so he uses Cyclops and Jean Grey's DNA to create the ultimate mutant to fight him
-This leads to Cyclops and Jean learning that Cable, the one they know from their time, is actually their son, making for a sweet moment when they welcome him out of a birthing pod
-Rachel, having done her part, decides to reneg on her deal with Sinister and uses the last of the Phoenix Force to kill Sinister
-With no more Phoenix keeping Cyclops and Jean in the future, they disappear before they can spend too much time with Cable, but Blaquesmith makes sure he has something to remember his parents
-Cyclops and Jean Grey go back into the past, but end up in some strange new time facing another team of unknown X-men looking to kill them
Overall, I loved this issue. It had Cyclops and Jean Grey at their best. I think their relationship in this issue was much better than anything we saw on the show. They are truly a relationship of equals here. Jean Grey never faints. Cyclops never cries "JEAN!" and Jean Grey never cries "SCOTT!" They truly just support each other, as two people in love often do. It's a wonderfully rendered version of their relationship on top of an entertaining, dramatic story that actually fills in a major blank that the cartoon never got around to.
On top of that, the letter I wrote got published in the back. That was a nice treat. So I have more reason than most to love this issue.
Again, this series won't last because Marvel isn't going to let it. That makes supporting it by buying the book all the more vital. Nothing sends a more powerful message than sales and money to a company. If you want to see more of this rather than more sterilization plots, then vote with your dollar X-men fans! X-men 92 is a great way to start.
