    Default Marvel art-appreciation!

Yeah, we need a thread where we gush over awesome marvel art, and talk about our favourite pieces, covers, pages, and designs! =)

I'll go first, here are some of my fav's:

    John Romita Sr - advertising pin-up. Ultra-iconic.

For the ultra-high quality version, go down below, or be square. ( much better cropping too)

Gene Colan - pencil commission. Outstanding. The way Colan makes his characters FLOW like water, like the WIND! Is unparallelled in the field. A master.

Frank Miller - Wolverine #1 cover. Super-iconic. This was Miller at peak shape and sanity, imho!

Can't wait to hear what favourite artists or pages you guys have!

Man, I miss old-school John Romita Jr. I'm talking circa Uncanny X-Men or Punisher War Journal. Hell, I'd love for Man Without Fear era JR Jr. to return.

    My personal favourites:

    Stuart Immonen

    Olivier Coipel

    Kev Walker

Some great art here already. Love the Romita Spidey, very iconic.

Nowlan is kind of an oddball artist - sometimes his work looks a little unnatural and stiff, other times it's just perfect. His use of lighting is always good, though.
This is one of my favourite of Nowlan's Doctor Strange drawings:

    Edit:

I like the looser, inked version better. It has more energy and the figure seems to flow more.

You can never have too many (well, maybe that's not true)! Now share some Namor pics.

Old-school JR Jr was definitely a treat - his work on Man Without Fear is a classic imho - BEST stuff he ever drew! In fact, I actually like that arc better than I like Born Again.

I would say the really great JRJR lasted all the way up to the shift of the millennium, his last really great work, was THOR. My Aesir... that series bristled with the power cosmic! It was his ode, to his older, more refined work. It was also the downfall, I realize in retrospect - some of his worse tendencies started developing there.

Still, it was some damn good stuff. Check this:

Nolan btw, Nolan... is also one of those guys, that IMHO, lost the touch when they got older. That weirdness, those strange and illogical fallacies in his art, that pop up now and then, even tho logically, they SHOULDN'T, because he's obviously far too good for that, they started somewhere in the 90's.

His 80's stuff tho', was dynamite. Outsiders Annual is one of my fav's of all time! The colouring he pioneered there, with the improved paper-quality and printing, was really cool - pretty much the bleeding edge, the final limit, of what one could do with the old-school technique.
( disregarding the french technique, which involved painting underneath pencils, and then photographing the result)

Someone will have to post a DC art-appreciation! Because the colour-narrative was outstanding in the first few pages, with Batman chasing a small-time crook.

Of course it's true. No one wants to see the first page covered in threads appreciating various parts of Namor's body. Okay, very few people would want to see that. I'm pretty sure I shared some pics in the original thread. I'll have to hunt it down later.
