Here's my perspective having not seen either film.
Suicide Squad was marketed as an edgy Deadpool/ Guardians of the Galaxy style superhero film with Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, and a recent Oscar winner playing the first cinematic post-Heath Ledger Joker. That's a good combination right now. Reviews came in later, which might explain the dropoff from Friday to Saturday.
Publicity for Ghostbusters was dominated by arguments about whether fans were too demanding, which is at best a distraction. It had some flawed trailers, and is in a genre that doesn't result in a lot of box office hits. Reviews were decent, but not spectacular. It's a reboot of a film that succeeded largely due to the alchemy of the original cast. From a commercial perspective, casting three women in their 40s and a superhero as eye candy isn't going to bring men to movie theaters.
Sincerely,
Thomas Mets
What's funny is people in the media and critics have been trying to spin Suicide Squad as a disaster that you shouldn't see. While praising Ghostbusters as a film that's better than what it actually is. We now have articles saying Ghostbusters was not a flop, despite Suicide Squad making more in 3 days (domestically and worldwide) than Ghostbusters has in 3 weeks.

Facts don't matter and the truth can be adjusted.
You know what's sad is that Star Trek Beyond is doing almost as bad as Ghostbusters, even though it got better reviews.

Apparently quality doesn't count.
"The story so far: As usual, Ginger and I are engaged in our quest to find out what the hell is going on and save humanity from my nemesis, some bastard who is presumably responsible." - Sir Digby Chicken Caesar.
“ Well hell just froze over. Because CM Punk is back in the WWE.” - Jcogginsa.
“You can take the boy outta the mom’s basement, but you can’t take the mom’s basement outta the boy!” - LA Knight.
"Revel in What You Are." Bray Wyatt.
Ghostbusters was driven by an agenda, pandering to feminists and SJWs while serving as a petty "eff you" to men.
Suicide Squad was driven by a desire to make a fun, entertaining movie that anybody could enjoy.
Not surprising at all that the former tanked while the latter was a hit. Turns out that calling half your audience basement dwelling sexists isn't a good marketing strategy.
Ultimately, the guys in charge at Sony made more bad decisions than Warner's.
Personally, I didn't want a reboot/remake of Ghostbusters with an all-female team. I wanted a sequel with the original characters and actors mentoring the new generation. One or two female ghostbusters would have been a welcome addition. Considering the old guys are not spring chickens, it would have been a nice send-off setting up a possible sequel without them. I think a lot of people wanted something like that. Many expected something like that in the last few years with talk of scripts by Aykroyd and Ramis (RIP ) in the air. That said, I wanted Ghostbusters to succeed.
It seems like most Ghostbusters fans wanted a passing of the torch sequel rather than a reboot. Many Ghostbusters reviews also said a flaw in the movie was retreading the same beats as the original film.
I think Sony would of been better off making a sequel in the same continuity like Jurassic World rather than a reboot.
