Anyone who does not put John Byrne on their list needs to study marvel history more. In the 80's Byrne was on fire and could sell anything. To me that is the true test of greatness is if a writer can have hits with multiple books.
Stan Lee.
Roger Stern.
Chris Clameront.
Roy Thomas.
Jim Starlin.
Yikes, when leaving writers as J.M.DeMatteis,John Byrne,Gerry Conway,David Michelinie,Mark Waid,Kurt Busiek to say a few not in a Top 5 writers of Marvel history makes this Top 5 quite difficult to say.
I like Steve Gerber's Manthing and Defenders and Omega the Unknown and Howard the Duck and just about everything he wrote, here and there.
I like Doug Moench's Master of Kung Fu, and he wrote a Godzilla that was fun and entertaining and imaginative.

The Avengers are Firefighters. We're the ones who fly into the blaze, whatever it is. Because we're the ones who
can, so we're the ones who have to.~Captain Marvel
