Default The Top Ten Movies : September 2nd-4th , 2016

This week's release of films saw 3 new releases. 2 of them weren't wide released films as they were in 1,500 and 2,000+ theaters only. One film stunned everyone and was in 362 theaters and did a huge number for that. Also this week saw Sony , desperate to have something to brag about with Ghostbusters , re-release the film in 600+ theaters to try and beat Central Intelligence as the top live action comedy film this year.

#1) . Don't Breathe - $15.7+ million (SGems) - This low budget horror film continues to roll along and is a bright spot for Sony given the year they have had. Don't Breathe has now made $51+ million in 2 weeks of release on a $9.9 million dollar budget. Stephen Lang has campaigned for the role of Cable , and this film may possibly get him the role.

#2). Suicide Squad - $10+ Million (Warner Bros) - Suicide Squad has showed huge legs the last 2 months. The film continues to stick around as new releases have arrived and the film passed Man of Steel's domestic box office take ($291+ million domestic) and is now eyeing possibly coming close to Batman V Superman's domestic take ($330+ million). Warners had to be happy as this film has now passed the $650+ million worldwide take with no China release.

#3) Pete's Dragon - $6.4+ million (Beuna Vista) - Disney has stayed pat and watched as the remake of Pete's Dragon will finish above its production budget this year. The film could have been a huge bomb. But the film slowly stuck around. Pete's Dragon has also had $28+ million chip in overseas to help its take.

#4) Kubo and the Two Strings - $6.4+ million (Focus) - This animated film maybe getting some love as the critics have praised it. Kubo has earned $34+ million against its $60+ million budget.

#5) Sausage Party - $5.3+ million (Sony) - Another animated film that has stuck around. Sony has to be impressed with low budgeted animated film. The film had a $19+ million dollar budget and has already earned $88+ million and is gunning for a $100+ million domestically. Its a bet Sony will push a sequel to this film quick since they need properties that make money film wise.

#6) The Light Between Oceans $4.9+ Million (Beuna Vista) This new film starring X-Men star Michael Fessbender only did $4.9 million on 1,500 screens. The drama film has a $20+ million dollar budget and likely won't be achieving that figure.

#7) Bad Mom's - $4.7+ million (STX) Bad Mom's passed the $100+ domestic box office take and the low budgeted film ($20+ million) has now started rolling out internationally. The film has done $37+ million outside the domestic market. Its the best performing STX film they have had this year and tripled the take of The Boy (released earlier this year). Its a bet a sequel will likely happen.

#8) War Dogs - $ 4.7+ Million (Warner Bros) This film seemed destined to bomb actually and as I posted last week had a $40+ million dollar budget. It had only done $24+ million and was falling fast. Then something weird happened , people started seeing the film. Its now earned $35+ million and has started rolling out internationally with $15+ million chipped in. The film will likely make its production budget back by next week given the rate its going.

#9) Hell or High Water - $4.5+ Million (LGF) - This Lions Gate film has been in limited release for 3 previous weeks and started expanding out. This low budgeted action drama ($12+ million production budget) stars Jeff Bridges and Chris Pine. The film has already passed its budget and will likely be a nice needed hit for Bridges who has stumbled a number of years with box office bombs.

#10) Mechanic : Resurrection - $4.2+ million (LG/S) This sequel again puzzled me since the previous film remake didn't do well at the box office or on home video. The newest film has a $40+ million dollar budget and has only done $14+ million thus far.

So what of Ghostbusters and its re-release ? The film ranked #21st for the week and did $1+ million dollars bringing its total to $126+ million and itching closer so Sony can brag its the #1 Live Action comedy of the year. I suspect Sony will keep it in those theaters til its domestic take passes Central Intelligence to get that promotion.

Another film that ranked at #12 was a stunner , in only 362 theaters "No Manches Frida" did $3.6+ million. This is a stunning number and one you have to be in awe of. Imagine if the film gets a wide release what it could actually do. Another wide release film landed spots below this and actually had a release in 2,000+ theaters. So that is impressive folks.
"The story so far: As usual, Ginger and I are engaged in our quest to find out what the hell is going on and save humanity from my nemesis, some bastard who is presumably responsible." - Sir Digby Chicken Caesar.
“ Well hell just froze over. Because CM Punk is back in the WWE.” - Jcogginsa.
“You can take the boy outta the mom’s basement, but you can’t take the mom’s basement outta the boy!” - LA Knight.
"Revel in What You Are." Bray Wyatt.

Suicide Squad doing well bodes well for the DC female characters movie that Margot Robbie wants to make. Which I want to see. No doubt there will also be a Suicide Squad 2.
