It was described I think in his introduction that he isn't fat, it is just muscle that to the outside observer looks like fat which these days wouldn't be much for Spider-man at his levels but more then enough for Daredevil.

i grew up reading about Kingpin who was big fat and a white dude.

The 80's Handbook states that he's trained as a sumo wrestler and knows martial arts and that a large part of his bulk is muscle, not fat. And Spider-Man holds (or held) back from fighting non-superpowered villains for fear of accidentally killing them, hence Fisk holding his own against Parker.

Also, Wellman is from the same universe as us.
