With all these appreciation threads popping up, I open one for this crazy duo of the brutal, first and imperfect clone of Spider-man and the upbeat Aztec/Mexican War demigoddess that partnered up with him:
Aracely Penalba & Kaine Parker
Now with more descriptions and fanart!
Feel free to reminisce about his days in the Clone Saga, his Lost Years, his fight and home in Houston or the way he is now, unexpectedly, in a team filled with young people called New Warriors with her.
Or feel free to talk about the time her world collided with his since they found each other inside a truck in Houston Harbor, the strange portents that appear in her dreams and all the real-world Aztec lore and mythology you want.
Go wild with theories and things you have noticed!
All the fun, all the sadness, all the scary and wonderful events of these two characters!

Well in one issue she wanted to try and lift Thor’s hammer, so I got Marcus To, artist of New Warriors and all around really cool guy, to draw her wearing Thor’s helmet. It was his idea to make the helmet really big on her and it’s an adorable idea, it came out so cute.

Hummingbird or Aracely is from Mexico, possibly "Native" American (her past is shrouded in multiple mysteries as she has amnesia; she remembers almost nothing before the moment she met Scarlet Spider in Houston Harbor after being brought there in a truck by human traffickers from a drug cartel lead by the Lobo - criminal werewolves - at the behest of a hyper-mysterious old guy called "Mr. Moctezuma", a creepy fella dressed in a tuxedo with a coyote animal at his side and a lot of bad mojo).
spoilers:
She is said to be the reincarnation of Huitzilopochtli, the chief Aztec god of War, the Hummingbird Lord, warrior of the Sun and patron of the Aztec peoples. The Aztecs of the city of Tenochtitlan were his faithful servants as they feed him (with human hearts from other warrriors) and spread his cult to other cities, tribes and regions.. by way of conquering, mostly. All in order to preserve creation and the universe (and taking other people riches for themselves).
Mr. Moctezuma wants her dead so the "Sixth Creation" can begin with the death of the current sun and the rise of Mictlan (the Aztec Underworld).
She "reeks of magic" and her powers are an oddball that includes - but is not limited to - telepathy, control and manipulation of emotions (inducing mass fear or anger or... arachnophobia for example), invoking and hurtling magical/sacred fire, self-levitation, knowing all of Kaine's thoughts (in real time), and all sort of weirdness and creepy stuff we have no names for yet. Expect to see this list growing in the future. |
end of spoilers
The ironic thing is that despite everything that has happened to her, her "heritage" and the fact that she lives with Kaine, the grim clone of Spider-man, she is generally an upbeat, positive-minded and cheerful character.

Scarlet Spider or Kaine is the shadow of Spider-man, the first (severely failed) attempt by the Jackal to clone Peter Parker. After being rejected by his creator, he spent years in a degenerative and maddening state, committing all kind of atrocities and making life impossible for both Peter and fellow clone Ben Reilly (the original Scarlet Spider) as he strove to at times protect them and at others to rain hell on them. He eventually sacrificed himself to save Spider-man, who after that started to think of him as a brother and even inscribed the "Parker" last name on Kaine's tombstone.
However, peace of the grave wouldn't last for Kaine as he was brought back by the Jackal and the villainous Queen by way of both his science and her magic, turning him into a spider monster at their service. Thankfully, he is saved from that state by Spider-man, who additionally manages to cure his degenerative disease. Peter lends him a stealth suit and together they help in the fight against the Queen forces to save New York.
After that, still afraid of someone coming after him and running from his past, Kaine tries to escape to Mexico. But on the way makes a stop in Houston, Texas. There he meets and rescues Aracely from human traffickers. And from this point his life is turned upside-down as he finds friends to care about, a city to protect and a legacy to uphold as he (reluctantly) accepts the mantle of his deceased "sibling" Ben Reilly when Houston's public starts calling him Scarlet Spider.
spoilers:
Kaine is the current recipient or host of THE OTHER, a totemic entity of the Spider-verse. As such, he has several extended spider abilities, like stabbing stingers, organic webbing and the capacity to "talk" to and direct spiders as well as the ever-constant presence of the Other inside him, an entity that sometimes comes out and transforms him into an immense spider monstrosity that only thinks of seeking prey. |
end of spoilers
The stealth suit that he took from Peter was altered by Madame Web to display a red-black coloration when outside stealth mode. This is his Scarlet Spider costume. When active, it can turn him invisible. If it suffers damage, it can self-repair by using advanced unstable molecules (think Fantastic Four) if its current user concentrates on it. A good thing, considering Kaine is always getting it torn apart (and bathing it in his and other people's blood) due his very direct, close-contact, bone-breaking, flesh-tearing, stabbing style of fighting.
