I'm not sure that I can use this one as it hasn't been published yet ? (but it won't be the first in this contest...)

I don't think this will count, if not I have another cover in mind. But when Star Trek debuted back in 1966, NBC commissioned some artists to do some promo art for their new fall lineup. This would appear in magazines like the TV Guide etc. The promo art was later used for the Star Trek paperback by James Blish that adapted scripts from the shows into short stories. The artist that did the Star Trek promo art was James Bama, who is currently known for his Western Art. But he spent the early part of his career as a commerical artist. He did the covers for some of the Doc Savage paperbacks and also did the art for the Aurora models Universal Monsters kits.
I had almost all of those novelizations and I always loved this promo art. I can come up with something else if this doesn't qualify but I did want to at least post the art here to commemorate the anniversary. I didn't see the first episode. I think the first one I saw was the Man Trap with the salt vampire. Lucky for us kids our Dad did try out Star Trek one night and he liked it. IIRC it was "Where No Man has Gone before" with Sally Kellerman (who would later have a movie career and was in M.A.S.H) and Gary Lockwood, who would go on to do Kubrick's 2001 A Space Odyssey. It looks like Bama had access to some of the shows matte paintings because IIRC that factory appears in "Where No Man has Gone Before". You can see a few more of the pieces promo art done that year on this the Film ScoreMB. Bama also did the Bonanza one. Would you believe that MAD magazines Jack Davis did one for Get Smart, Mel Brooks and Buck Henry's spy show comedy? Would you believe it was Irving Forbush with a box of crayolas?

Here's a larger image of the Delta Vega lithium cracking station as it was called. BTW, Albert Whitlock did all the matte paintings for the original series but he was uncredited. He had a long career in Hollywood doing work in films the Hitchcock's The Birds and Marnie, Roger Corman's Pit and the Pendulum, the Sting, The Blues Brothers, the 1979 version of Dracula (Frank Langella), etc.

That's what I suspected. I did look through the gcd and I know Gold Key came out with some comics around the time of the show's airing. But it looks like they used mostly stills from the show. I couldn't find a comic that used this. Maybe they would have to get the rights to it. I will post something else over the weekend. But I thought this would be a cool bit of Star Trek history to post.
So, this must have been edited by Julius Schwartz?Spike-X sees how things were:
"Because our cover artist got super high, and now we have to write a story that explains this ****!"
