Meredith & David Finch Go "More Mainstream" with "Wonder Woman"

Will definitely be picking up the first issue. Big fan of Azzarello's run so I can't help but be a bit nervous, especially with quotes like "we're definitely going to steer the book a little more into a more mainstream -- I guess I'd say there will be some superhero stuff in it." Super hero stuff in a WW book, no kidding? and Mainstream, how? What's wrong with the book now, that doesn't make it "mainstream"? Isn't this the best selling WW run in a while?
"We want her to be a strong -- I don't want to say feminist, but a strong character. Beautiful, but strong." Why don't you want to say feminist? Why is that a dirty word? "Beautiful, BUT strong?" Why are the two things seemingly at odds?
Anyway, despite my reservations, I AM excited for a fresh take from a female writer, so we shall see how it goes.

Going to repeat what I said in the other thread:

Speaking positively for once I will say this: I think that making Wonder Woman a bit more superhero-oriented is not a bad thing at all.

Think about it, we had Azzarello's Vertigo vision of WW for 3 years, that's a pretty long run considering the current state of the industry and while it was masterful for most of its course it's also true that it was getting a bit tedious after the novelty of the style wore off. Even Azzarello already said that he told all the stories he wanted to tell and I don't consider the right course of action to put another writer to try to just simply tell a light version of it.

I have serious doubts about Meredith Finch as the writer due to how she got the job but I'm still willing to try to see what she's able to do. Despite of my complaints about her, my biggest concerns go to her husband, the guy simply can't draw women, he believes that putting big boobs on a girl is enough to make her sexy but forgets that it's necessary good anatomy and natural atractiveness.

Hell, if I wanted a cheesecake artist I would prefer Ed Benes a hundred times over him.

I think it's great that DC hired a female writer not named "Gail Simone" to write the ongoing adventures of one of their iconic characters...

But, husband or not, to pair a female writer with an infamously cheesecakey, female objectifying artist seems counter intuitive...

But, we'll have to see when it comes out...

Everything changes so I guess my time with Wonder Woman is almost up. I knew this had to happen but it doesn't make it any less of a bummer.

This interview did nothing to make me think that this was going to be a good continuation. It is clear that the book will be more in line with the DC world, and the DC world is a scary, women objectifying, snuff porn world of weirdness. I am not complaining that the book will go mainstream, because it was inevitable, but mainstream DC is pretty wretched for women or people who don't want to read over the top violence as a cheap emotional gimmick and brooding "heroes" who don't really seem to get much done. It is what it is and all things change.

David Finch is a great artist and I'm very excited to see him on Wonder Woman. I will wait for the first comic before I say anything about the writer..

This I really don't see how DC would think Finch is a good choice for attracting female readers. I also hope Meredith is a good writer. Id much rather have a good male writer that can write females well than a bad female writer.
The fact that Meredith, a very unexperienced comics writer, seems to have been hired only so Finch would be the artist bothers me to no end.

That was my thought as well, but that penciled art for an upcoming issue attached to the interview doesn't look bad. Let's see more of that, and less of the other work that was included in the interview.

As for Meredith, I don't blame her. She's a newish writer thrust into a role she's unprepared for. MAybe she'll step up to the task. This interview doesn't comfort me, though.

Everything sounds promising to me.

That pencil sketch of Diana from the book looks beautiful, so I'm less concerned about the art by the minute.

Dealing with all the facets of Diana's life sounds good. Love the idea of Superman showing up.

More traditional superhero stories will be a welcome change. I'm a huge mythology nut, but after three years, even I'M ready to see Diana take on straight-up supervillains.

All-in-all? My optimism remains high.

The "cheesecake" factor of his art never deterred me in the past and now part of his process is having it meet his wife's approval every step of the way, so I wouldn't worry. And the fact that David owns up to his shortcomings as a writer makes it easier for me to trust his faith in Meredith, so why not.
