Used to be, in the old days of mechanically-separated 64-choices color, that when something was black with blue highlights, that meant black.

That's why Superman had blue hair for decades -- it wasn't meant to be read as blue, but as black.

So when Dave Cockrum designed that costume for Carol, I "read" it as black, and thought it was very sharp. When we brought Carol into AVENGERS, I wanted to bring back that costume, and since color technology had changed, I asked that the highlights be colored dark gray, to make it clear it was black.

And it looked good that way.

Black + blue = black? I thought black + white = black.

I'm sure there was a recent thread on Northstars hair which backed this up.

You'd have to see some old issues of comics. Check out Luke Cage and Misty Knight, both of which have black hair. You'll see blue, though. True enough, Aurora and NorthStar also have black hair, but Byrne went with the monochromatic version for their hair.

I thought both Northstar and Aurora initially we're shown with black hair but with white highlights?

Not only that but it is also true to the comicbook character Carol Danvers' character trait of wanting to be her 'own woman'.

I thought this was an excellent look and imo her best

If they wanted to alter it, just making it a full body black with the sash and bolt would look very cool imo and her hair long with a long sash allows for some great lines in a drawing

Her current look is too busy detail wise fir me and looks too cluttered, I also don't think the colour separation works well as a dynamic visual

it is space soldier like so I guess it works that way

I view E to be a terrific revamp of the 1977 red and navy blue Ms. Marvel costume

See I really like the tweeks Anka made. I think it makes perfect sense for her to have a utility belt.

Her Ms. Marvel outfit was fun but a little too impractical and doesn't make a whole lot of sense for who she is now. Also, I really like this color variation Anka did for one of his costume redesign possibilities.

Those are impressive designs but I still miss the simplicity of her classic black costume designed by Dave Cockrum.

Was it black? I always though it was dark blue in color,kinda similar to Thor's original costume?

It's also a somewhat complex issue because older comics would use dark blue as a substitute for black. For example, Spider-Man was originally supposed to be colored red and black, but because of the color limitations of the era, the parts of his suit that were supposed to be black were colored dark blue instead. Somewhat similar is his future counterpart Spider-Man 2099, who was colored dark blue but described in early issues by the characters as wearing black.

Yeah, I think stuff like these is even done these days too. I always considered the X-Men original uniforms to be yellow and black but I see there's lot of people who consider to be blue...

They're officially blue and gold. That's where the 90s team names came from.

I never realized this before. I liked the team names but it never occured to me that it was in honor of the Original 5 X-Men navy blue and gold colored uniforms! Just as the Dave Cockrum designed navy blue and gold colored Ms. Marvel costume
