Will Dr. Strange Be Marvel Studios First Big Flop?

Yes, I believe it will not be as successful as Disney would want it to be.

Remember, this is the first Marvel Studios movie that was made entirely without the involvement of the Marvel Comics guidance/approval/etc. committee. Some thought the committee was too restrictive, some thought it was great to have comic creators involved who understand the comics & characters.

So if this fails...it's completely on Kevin Fiege (who even though seems to have done a superb job, some have said he himself really isn't the impetus for the greatness of the prior Marvel movies).

But it certainly doesn't seem like Dr. Strange is getting the same positive buzz as prior Marvel movies. To me it is similar to Disney's Rogue One Star Wars experiment.

But at this point Fiege (who is himself a fan of the comics) really has as much of a hold on the source material as any writer/editor at Marvel would have. And the people writing the movie scripts are also better story-tellers than a good portion of those writing the comics, currently. So I think this is a non-issue.

I saw the poster and thought "oh my god, they're really determined to mine every toy possible". There's even an emoji movie of all things. To call this bottom of the barrel is an insult to the underside of a round wood container.

Well in Dreamwork's defense at least a Trolls movie makes sense. You have actual characters there to make a world around.

But yea an Emoji movie is just plain stupid. We are beyond bottom of the barrel at this point and moved on to trying to scrap up chewed gum off the ground in a pathetic attempt to try to repackage and sell it. *sigh*

...except for the fact that Sherlock is the 8th most popular British drama TV shows of all time, and had sold-out showings of the Christmas special stateside last year. Which means he has international appeal.

Was that a very limited release? Didn't even know he came out in theatres here. Just knew it was playing on PBS like the rest of the series does.

And yet no one has mentioned Mads Mikkelsen!!! The cast for Dr Strange is probably the strongest yet for a Marvel movie (Avengers had a few years to put the pieces into place). And if a decent amount of screen time is given to Mads then I'm expecting him to be a strong presence. Check out his Danish stuff (Pusher 2, Open hearts, After the wedding, The Hunt) to see how good this guy is.

Love Mads Mikkelsen. When he was cast in the DS movie, I thought secretly Marvel managed to get the F4 rights and he was going to play Victor Von Doom. Let's face it. He'd be the best fucking Doctor Doom!

Thought he was good in Casino Royale, loved his stuff in Clash of the Titans and he just brought that IT factor to Hannibal.

It was one of those 1-2 night only deals. I think there were 4 showings in the theaters around here and they all sold out...

I think marvel has a good enough track record to the point where fans are willing to give any marvel movie a chance. As long as the movie doesn't suck, it should be fine.

And what else actually looks better....Miss Peregrine, Rouge One, Fantastic Beasts, I've had people interested in borrowing my Doctor Strange masterworks for this one.

Miss Peregrine comes out today, so it wouldn't be competition for Strange.

Fantastic Beasts comes out 2 weeks after Strange and is helmed by a director who did several of the HP films. Trolls, an animated kids movie by Fox, comes out the same day as Strange. I don't expect much overlap or competition from Trolls, but with Fantastic Beasts and Strange both being magic/supernatural films, I could see FB stealing Strange's audience by the time of it's release.

I just hope and pray that he'll possibly have signed up for more than one film. Even if it's not another Dr Strange appearance. Doom? Dear God!!! How good that would be. Thankfully he turned down the role of the dark elf leader in Thor 2 and did Hannibal instead. Christopher Eccleston was wasted in the role and obscured behind the make up etc. Never a fan of Casino Royale, I thought he was wasted in that role. Clash of the Titans was fun and he owned Hannibal. He certainly does his best work in his native tongue though.

Far from it, but until that point it probably was the strongest line up Marvel had assembled - excuse the pun.

Only it didn't. All the sole movies going up to The Avengers had stronger cast, all of them. I like Cobie Smulders, but her casting in that movie feels so odd, and by odd I mean bad, I'm not even sure why she's there. I mean, her character is pretty pointless, so I'm not actually sure why that character is there, but I'm also just not sure why they cast her in that role. She feels like Joss Whedon thought he was casting a tv show, and she's pretty bland in the role. Until I saw Unexpected I thought maybe she probably shouldn't even be in movies.

Neither of those are likely to compete with Strange. They may possibly compete with each other, but the audience for them is so small anyway it likely won't matter. Certainly it will be a non-issue by the time Dr Strange is released.
