I came into this thread thinking nobody would think to suggest Alan Davis on Excalibur so I could do it and look smart. Turns out he's quite a popular suggestion - which shows just how true it is.

    So I'll go very oldschool:
    Steve Ditko for Doctor Strange.

    John Buscema on Conan.

By the way, anyone know if Sal Buscema ghosted for John? A few Savage Sword mags looked like Sal's art but they were credited to John.

Possibly but I doubt it. Though John did mainly breakdowns in the latter years of his career, at his peak in the late 60s and 1970s, he was very reluctant to let others touch his work and he wasn't slow in telling people that either. He even liked to ink his own pencils because he felt that no one else would know how to bring the best out of his own pencils than himself though he did say that Sal of all the many inkers that he worked with was the one he preferred because he knew his work better than the others.

Personally I thought that the John Buscema/Tom Palmer art on their first run on the Avengers book remains the best artwork ever on that book.

When I saw the thread title, Walt Simonson on Thor immediately came to mind.
