Heh, this reminds me of the Black Panther board I ran when Priest was writing it. We'd get people every few days complaining that they should remove Priest and let a black guy write it.
'Dox out.

Of course the problem with this line of thinking is that sooner or later (but probably sooner) you'll have to permanently retire all of these characters, because even the most fanboyish writer doesn't want to work on the same characters forever.
Peter David totally messed up Louise Simonson's X-Factor.
I think so far, Watchmen is the only one I agree with.
The rest are generally pre-existing character or teams made up of pre-existing characters living in a shared universe.
I'm a bit loath to apply that rule for anyone in a shared universe, but:
Sandman - Neil Gaiman
Starman (Jack Knight) - James Robinson
Hitman - Garth Ennis
Ambush Bug - Keith Giffen
I guess I don't really feel this with any book/character. Most of the classic stuff is collaborative, in the end, anyway, either explicitly or implicitly, so there's rarely one author alone. But, even then, the only time I really roll my eyes is when it's done to secure a trademark or something; using someone's characters to trash them. That's crap, though I guess as valid as any other crap.
I'd rather have the comics available and decide, myself, if they're worth my time or not.
Patsy Walker on TV! Patsy Walker in new comics! Patsy Walker in your brain! And Jessica Jones is the new Nancy! (Oh, and read the Comics Cube.)
Geoff Johns- Green Lantern, JSA, Aquaman
Grant Morrison- X-Men, JLA
Roger Stern- The Avengers
