This week saw the arrival of the 3rd sequel in the Ron Howard/Tom Hanks series based on Dan Brown's books. The last 2 films did very big worldwide and domestically. The 1st film "The Da Vinci Code" did $217+ million domestic here. The 2nd film in the series did $133+ million domestic . So how did the 3rd film do ? We shall see....
1.) Boo ! A Madea Halloween - $16.6+ million (LGF) - Madea keeps on rolling in its 2nd week of release. This small budgeted film in the Madea series has turned a tidy profit thus far and crossed $52+ million domestic mark for the 2nd week of release.
2.) Inferno - $15 million (Sony) - Poor Sony had to watch as the 3rd film in the series based on Dan Brown's books bombed in the US. Inferno had the lowest budget of all 3 films in this series ($75 million) but it won't come close here. The films however have a big international following and the movie has opened to $142+ million thus far. This movie will do likely less than $40-50 million domestically and be powered on international box office.
3.) Jack Reacher: Never Go Back - $9.9+ million (Paramount) - The 2nd Jack Reacher film is near the $40 million US domestic take in 2 weeks. Its budget is small at $60 million which helps. The film has started opening internationally with $54 million chipped in there.
4.) The Accountant - $8.4+ million (Warner Brothers) - The assassin picture from Ben Affleck continues its slow run as the film has earned $61+ million domestically and slowly going to a solid deal for Affleck. The film also has slowly started being released internationally and chipped in another $10+ million.
5.) Ouija: Origin of Evil - $7+ million (Universal) - This prequel horror film with the low $9 million budget has done very well leading to Halloween. The film has earned $24+ million domestically in 2 weeks.
6.) The Girl on the Train (2016) - $4.2+ million (Universal) - This drama film continues its slow run at the theaters. The film has earned nearly $66 million US domestic and will likely chip closer to the $75 million take.
7.) Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children - $3.9+ million (Fox) - The controversial Tim Burton film (look up Hollywood casting controversy) has earned $79+ million domestically thus far. The film however has done $152+ million internationally for a big $232+ million worldwide take. Whether it helps the film turn a profit remains to be seen as the film had a $110 million budget.
8.) Keeping Up with the Joneses - $3.3+ million (Fox) - While the above film may help Fox , this $40 million dollar budgeted film is a colossal bomb from Jon Hamm. The film has only earned $10+ million in 2 weeks and seems headed to being a bomb this year.
9.) Storks - $2.7+ million (Warner Brothers) - This animated film from Warner Brothers is likely gonna fall outta the top 10 next week. But the film has nearly earned back its production budget (its at $68+ million) and has earned $153+ million worldwide. Which has to please WB for how its done.
10.) Ae Dil Hai Mushkil - $2.1+ million (FIP) - In what is pretty incredible and shows the power some films have , this Indian romantic drama film only opened on 332 screens this week. And is in the top 10. The film has a $10 million dollar budget (Its compared to Indian currency which is $70 million crore) . And has earned $7.9 million thus far in box office.
Notes -
Deepwater Horizon has fallen outta the top 10 . The Magnificent Seven has passed its $90 million production budget and has already earned $157+ million worldwide.
